Maine
Heading to Maine next month. Still undecided about traveling toll roads or avoiding them (concerned about low overpasses). Thought about EZ pass but I would probably only use it this trip. Any suggestions on routes?

Just came from Maine
Virginia to Maine. I was more concerned with avoiding the big Cities DC, Philadelphia, NY, and Boston. I would not worry too much about tolls. The roads are decent and they will cost you. I was towing a car on a dolly so they got their money from me. If you are in a motor home not towing it will not be too bad of a hit. We stayed in Mount Desert Island.

When you come Up towards Portland, skip the turnpike (I95) which begins just north of Portland, it’s expensive and takes you out of the way. Instead, take 295 up through Yarmouth, etc. There is a single toll booth in Gardner and it will be much better. Stop at LL Bean along the way if you’re so inclined.

If you do use your EZ pass, make sure it’s setup for the correct number of axles. We did a trip from Denver to Maine, via Ohio, a few summers ago. Ohio is a BIG state! If you take the northern route, through upstate New York, plan your fuel stops before getting close to NYC. I didn’t and had to get gas at a small station...no fun.,

If you take I-90, note that Massachusetts no longer has toll booths. If you don't have an EZ-Pass then they will mail you a bill, and you pay the highest rate plus a surcharge for the mailing.
The only way to really avoid it is to stay farther north and go through Vermont and New Hampshire on state roads. Slower, but beautiful country.

Follow the truck routes and you should be fine. We usually run RT1 in Maine. I'm in no hurry and the scenery is much better. If a semi can do it I can. ;-)

Another option would be i90 to i86 to Binghamton to i81 north to i88 to Albany to i90 it will cut out a lot of the pay road thru ny state.

Stayed in Bar Harbor KOA. If you go into Bar Harbor there is RV street parking at the end of the street with all the shops. There are whale arching boats there at the other end of the street with all the shops. Not too much to do in town. A lot of T-shirt and souvenir stores. While in Maine we also stopped in the LL Bean village. All stores open 24 hours except the outlet store.

We’re going to be just outside Bangor. Bar Harbor was preferable but not their prices, even for a month.

There is a lot more to Maine than Bar Harbor. Look around and see the rest.
