Major bridge fire across the Ohio River on I-75 (Cincinnati) on Nov. 11th

rsdata posted this yesterday and lives in the area: https://www.forestriverforums.com/fo...-a-220328.html He is going to add updates as he sees fit.

I found that thread by accident last night because I usually just read this one and we're traveling in that area this weekend.

The Brent Spence double decker bridge had a semi carrying a hazmat, potassium hydroxide, hit a jackknifed semi just before 3 AM on November 11th. The temps from an estimated 400 gallons of diesel combined with the corrosive effects of the potassium hydroxide when combined with water has the bridge closed, maybe for several weeks.

Another old suspension bridge, Roebling, was also closed later because it has a 22,000 pound limit and many semis were using it as a detour.

We went around the bridge several times this summer when they were working on the lanes over the bridge and there is no easy way east or west. Plan on and extra hour+. They said this morning it will be days to fix the damage.

Potassium Hydroxide is NOT flammable, it is corrosive. You know it by the common name: lye

Only driven through Cincy once and that was in our SUV. That was enough to convince me to stay on 275 around it with the RV.

The two states have been wrangling over the cost and location for a new bridge for decades now, Maybe this will kick someone into making a decision satisfactory to both sides.

Heat and structural steel don't mix. Depending of several factors it could be weeks or even years before traffic is back crossing the Ohio River there.

When traveling thru the Cincy area, we have always taken the eastern I-275 bridge, there's also a I-471 bridge.

Yep. No stress, adds only a couple of minutes IF there are no downtown tieups; otherwise, it's actually quicker.

Something to ponder. With the cost to repair the bridge estimated at 3+ million dollars, I wonder if those at fault for the damage have adequate insurance?

Hopefully this will be the motivating factor to make them finally get it replaced. Heck back in the 90's it was described as functionally obsolete, so what is it now??

At least "Death Hill", the KY section of I-75 leading down to the bridge, was upgraded. Many deaths on this stretch likely resulted in priority over replacing the bridge. That said, we may start using the I 275 bypass instead of the bridge.
