I like 99 to 38 to 101 much more scenic. The route through Eugene is about another 30 miles longer but you are on the freeway longer so it is probably a toss up as far as timing.

IIRC there is a limited clearance underpass on 38. 12 feet maybe? Too low for my rig, but might be alright for yours. Were I you, I'd check it out though.

We've done I-5 to Sutherlin and picked up 138 to 38 to 101 to Florence quite a few times with our 40' Newmar Dutch Star. No issues and a nice drive. However, try to do it other than Friday - Sunday as many other RVers do it on the weekends.

I take 138 to 38 to 101. Last June on a Sunday there must have been 10,000 RV's coming back from the coast. I didn't see any low overpasses.

Sorry, the "warning" I posted above was written in a senior moment. The OR DOT shows the Elk Creek Tunnel at MP 39 on Route 38 as having a 14' foot clearance, so you should be good to go as others have stated. One unverified source I found said it was 12'3" at the shoulders.

Like twogypsies, we have traveled up to Sutherlin and the on to 138 and 38 over to Florence. It is a beautiful drive along the river. Sutherlin has a really fun RV park called Hi-Way Haven. It is an old drive in theater and the show movies on the weekend! Depending on your site, you can sit and enjoy the movie from there.

For me it would depend on if it was a quick trip or a sightseeing trip. We live in Phoenix, just south of Medford, and if I'm in a hurry I use I 5 as far as possible because it is much faster than the routes between it and 101, and 101 itself.
If I'm not in a hurry and am sightseeing I will use a more scenic route to 101 and more of 101 itself. As already mentioned 138 at Southerlin to 38 to 101 is a beautiful drive. We often have lunch at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area just before Reedsport and 101.
Just my 2c.

138 to 38
Yep, I remember now. That is a nice drive. Thanks to everyone for reminding me of that route.
