Medora, ND to West Glacier, MT

We're planning our late summer/early fall trip from OH to Glacier National Park (and beyond) and need some route planning advice please. We'll be traveling in a 40' class A with a tow dolly.

We plan to head across 94 in ND and stop to see some of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. From that area (TRNP/Medora) we'll head to the West Glacier RV Park.

I don't have my Garmin in front of me so I'm working in google maps and it's routing us from 94, to MT-200S W and MT-13 N to US-2 W.

First.....Is the route beyond 94 able to be traveled with our rig and if not, do you have an alternate route to suggest?

Next.....if the '94, to MT-200S W and MT-13 N to US-2 W' route is viable.....Will there be any places along that route for an overnighter that can accommodate our rig without disconnecting the dolly. We plan to split the drive from Medora to West Glacier into 2 days.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

We did that route (Medora to Glacier) a few years ago. We loved the NP and Medora. If you can, attend the outdoor show at Medora. It's a beautiful setting, and the show is an enjoyable and wholesome piece of Americana. Well worth the price of admission. And If I could make another suggestion, from Medora and the NP, we headed back East a bit on I-94 to catch US-85N to make our way up to Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site in Williston, ND. Fort Union was a commercial Trading Post from 1828 and 1867, and was considered the most important fur trade post on the Upper Missouri River. When we were there, there were people in period dress who were well versed in th fort's history and importance. We really enjoyed the stop and history lesson.
From Fort Union, we continued up to US-2 to continue to day's journey West on our way to Glacier. Enroute, we had a stop over at Sleeping Buffalo Hot Springs 669 Buffalo Trl, Saco, MT. My recollection is they had pull-thu sites. It was a very acceptable overnight stop, well off the highway. From there, it's about 300 miles to East Glacier. We stayed 3-nights each at East and West Glacier, and we were very glad that we did as access to the beauty of Glacier NP is so much easier when done from both sides. We did this in a 36' Class A, towing. Roads were good all the way up to US-2, and presented no problems for the MH. Hope this is helpful. Safe travels

Thanks for the info Mike...makes me think that I should have mentioned that in addition to route info I'd welcome any recommendations about the area(s) we'll be heading through. It's our first time in that neck of the woods and in those NP's so all tips, advice and experience is appreciated.

Just curious how much time you are budgeting for your trip. There is soo much to see enroute to Glacier from OH (We're in Cincy), and on the return. We did our trip with friends (2nd RV) and just had a great trip. I'd be glad to share if interested, but I'm sure you already have your own designs on what you want your itinerary to cover. It will be a memory maker for sure.

Don't sweat Mike's Routing.. Ran a bunch of oversize DOD loads all the way across ND & MT on US-85 & US-2

The initial route is good for any size RV. However, instead of 13 to Hwy 2, take 24 north toward Glasgow/Fort Peck. Fort Peck has an excellent Corp of Engineer campground with huge spaces. Continue west on 2 to East Glacier and on to West Glacier. Travel on the top half of fuel once you get off the interstate - especially in Montana - Big Sky Country (& lots of open space).

We've taken Hwy 2 from Washington to Michigan. It's a great relaxing road to travel.

We took 94 out of Medora west to Forsyth. Caught Hwy 12 there west to Hwy 89 just N of White Sulphur Spring. North on 89 to Great Falls, MT. Beautiful drive! Stayed at Dicks RV Park in Great Falls for a few to explore then on up 89 to Browning. Great route, easy scenic drive pulling a fiver!

We then took Hwy 2 on across Glacier NP and stayed at Kalispell on the West side for a spell. LOTS to see and do. If you get the chance, hike up to Avalanche Lake in Glacier - simply breathtaking. Drove the road to the Sun a few times to catch both sides of Glacier, 89 on East side, also Flathead lake, Hungry Horse Dam and Reservoir. Then on out to Lookout Pass on the Idaho/Montana border for the bike ride of the Hiawatha Trail.
Gonna be a great trip!
