Free spots that I know:
1) The LA rest area between Baton Rouge and Lafayette ... special parking area for RVs ... all night security ... I don't remember the mile marker
2) The TX rest area near Columbus (between Houston and San Antonio)
3) The NM welcome center about 20 miles after El Paso.
Some other notes ....
All rest areas on I-10 in TX have wi-fi.
There are several Passport America RV parks along your route. I have stayed in Passport parks in TX, NM, and AZ.
I am currently in Santee Lakes (and will be here through all of April) ... look for the IRV2 logo on the back of my Journey ...

It's been almost a year since we took the same route to SD. If you have a diesel pusher, fuel up in Yuma. This campground has a March special of 15% off: www.sdrvresort.com We stayed there for a week on our last tirp. It too is walking distance to trolly & easy on/off I 8.

Since this is a "speed trip", maybe the Wally World parking lots. Always call ahead and ask permission.
Rusty, where was that cg we stayed right on I 10 last year? I can't even remember the city we were close too.

Take I-12 from Slidell to Baton Rouge and you'll bypass New Orleans.

as others have said, always ask the store management or security for permission to park overnight. ask them where in the lot to park also.

Sounds like a great trip being planned. To go around New Orleans, going west, when you get to Slidell, I-10 splits. I-12 goes north around Lake Pontchartrain and heads for Baton Rouge. This will eliminate the problems of going thru N.O.
Have a great and enjoyable trip.
Jim
