Montrose to Million Dollar..
I happen to be sitting in Montrose right now, and I would like to maybe drive (in the truck) a portion of the Million dollar highway.
Our 16 month old will generally only tolerate so much time in a car.. around 3 hours.
So from Montrose, where is a good turning back point?

How about considering driving to Silverton. Spend a couple hours there walking around town and taking in some of the shops. Have lunch then head back.
1:30 to 2 hours each way. You might take your swim suits and stop in Ouray at the hot springs pool.

Agree. Drive to Silverton. Eat lunch. Watch the trains turn around. Drive back.

As has been said, simple, drive to Ouray scout out the hot springs, continue on to Silverton, eat lunch drive back into the National Forest, drive back to Ouray , do the hot tub/pool then back to Montrose.
Kido will have plenty of nap time between stops.
Next day do RT 145 Telluride Trout Lake and Dunton .

The kid will nap once, and we might get 2 hours of nap, but once she wakes up, all bets are off

I know of what you speak- - - I have 6 grands all Girls - and have carried - Pushed - Back and front Packed, up and to many a Mountain top and a Number of Hidden/Secret/Lost..........Lakes - From the ages of 6 month to 6 years. (Now they are 6-15 Beautiful and can almost carry me - )
So,...... Time the drive,.... and the activities around the,...... "All Important Nap" ......then go find things She will enjoy - A store, with a stuffed animal - or a stream with rocks to Toss. Trust me she has NO interest in the Trees or the Rocks you are looking at.
But you are close - You - Do Not Want to Miss It - see it - push it - Take as many Pictures as possible of it, But Do It!
Last night one of the Nephews (40th year of Family Reunion at the Beach) asked if I could recommend just ONE place to all of them where would it Be????????
With No Hesitation I said the San Juan's - One of the last truly wild and unspoiled areas that is not a National Park -
Almost 50 years ago when I took my first trip to the Area - Dunton, was a Logged Cabin - Bar with cabins and hot springs owned by a bunch of brothers. wild and crazy - It's gone and a Resort has filled in it's space. - -
So Do It, The Baby will have no memeroy of it Good or Bad when she is grown, -
Best of Luck,

Not the answer to your question but if you ever get the chance, take the narrow gauge from Durango to Silverton if it is still running, not sure if you can take it the other way. Did it years ago with the kids and it was a great trip.

You're not going to get it done in 3 hours. Tell the kid to suck it up and enjoy the ride.

Well, by now you will have done the trip--or not. You may found out there is construction on 550 due to massive landslides that adds maybe 10-15 min to the trip. You can't make regular highway speeds on that section due to lots of switchbacks and traffic.
So---did you go or not? If you went, how did the tyke handle it?
Been in Ridgway State Park for last 2 weeks, really hot and dry here.

Cute, cause 16 month olds listen so well 😋
We ended up not doing that drive, but we did do black canyon and hiked some of the trail at the top.
