Mt. Rushmore Trip

Hello, my family and I will be traveling this summer to Mt. Rushmore from Texas pulling a 35 ft 5th wheel. Trip planners have us traveling through OK, NE, KS, for the shortest route. I am worried about traveling on 2 lane black tops in the middle of nowhere. A second route is through NM To CO to travel I-25 to WY then into SD? Which puts on an interstate for the majority of the trip. Please advise......

Glad to have you here in the forum with us. You're gonna like it here.

You have to take the route that will make you feel the safest on. I have driven extensively on two lane roads in the middle of nowhere and felt comfortable, If you don't then don't do it. You will become okay with it in the future.

Happy Trails!!!

Its been awhile (41 years) since I was last in the Black Hills but loved the drive there and the area. The states of Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Kansas are not what I'd call the middle of nowhere. What do you think will happen while travelling on 2 lane black top that causes concern?

An issue is always a break down or finding diesel. This is our second biggest trip, our fist was to Florida thru I-10.

I usually carry 1 diesel gas can with me, however I will add a second one. I’m in a Ford F-250 Super Duty. Thanks again for the advice.

Google Maps puts the shortest almost directly north from San Antonio - 1203 miles - via I-10 to Junction, TX then 83/153 to Sweetwater then 84 to Lubbock, TX and I-27 to Amarillo then 87/287/385.

I didn't calculate the I-25 route but it looks way out of your way.

For 16 years of full-timing we traveled secondary roads and rarely interstates and never had a problem.

You're going through a lot of farm country and many drive diesel trucks or need diesel for their equipment. Every town will have diesel. It's not rare. Yes, you 'could' have mechanical issues but think positive. Make sure your tires are in good condition and I'm sure you have roadside insurance. Really... people rarely have mechanical issues if they take care of their equipment.

As TonyDi said above, go with what you'll feel more comfortable doing. Have a good trip!
