Muskegon Mi to Boone NC KOA

45' Newmar Essex towing a Jeep Wrangler. Leaving tomorrow headed to Boone. From looking at GPS suggested routes looks like 2 options. 1. Muskegon to Indianapolis to Cinci to Lexington Ky to Hazard to Boone. #2 Muskegon to Toledo to Findlay Ohio to Columbus to Charleston WV via Hwy 35 to Beckley to Wytheville to Damascus Va to Boone. Both routes looks like curvy mountain roads. Would sure appreciate information for the best route to get there. Not necessarily looking for fastest as we have 3 travel days. Looking for safest and best roads. After a few days in Boone then on to Lake Toxaway and any help with directions for this leg would also be appreciated.

We run to Knoxville on occasion and have found the route to Indy then Cincinnati to I75 is the most stress free. The only real mess is around Indy. The mountains before Knoxville aren't bad.
Going over to 75 earlier puts Dayton and Cincinnati on your route. Both can be a real pain because of never ending construction.

I just came from West Jefferson (near Boone) a couple weeks ago. I was coming from VA on I-81, so I went south from Wythville on I-77 to US Hwy 421, which goes into Boone. For me that was a direct and easy route. I have come into West Jefferson from the west, but went on real mountain roads.
I do not know a good route to get to Lake Toxaway, but have been there. I pulled a fifth wheel from Highlands going east on Hwy 64 to get there once; but will never do that again. Hwy 64 going east from Franklin, NC to Lake Toxaway is not the way to go and it's not recommended at all.
Hwy 64 may not be bad coming from the east to Lake Toxaway, but I do not know as I haven't been that way. I stayed at Riverbend RV Resort when I was there; great little park. You probably should call your campground and ask them for directions.
On my way back to TX from West Jefferson recently I stayed at the Cullasaga River Park outside of Franklin, NC and found it to be a very nice campground. It is on Hwy 64, before it gets bad, and fairly close to Highlands.
Hope you find a good route,

Getting to Lake Toxaway will not be much fun. Highway 64 from the west is extremely tight through the Cullasaga Gorge (thing 2 skinny lanes on a cliff with mirrors to see traffic coming from the other direction). Hwy 64 from the east is twisty from Brevard, but not like the west side. I'd recommend camping away from Lake Toxaway and driving in with your toad.
