True but..I would not want to take my class A on the section of Hwy 12 north of Kittyhawk up to Duck/Corolla. While it is certainly a nice road, its one way in/out and traffic tends to really back up there during summer months. Plus, its mostly the cutesie expensive shops crammed with SUVs full of families. If I go into that area I take the toad.
Ocracoke as I recall has a parking area near the visitors center where you can park the RV to walk or ride your bike to see the town.

I have driven it in a 38' with a toad, ferries and all, from VA to Cedar Island.

drove the Outer Banks in car. Was't all that impressed with the ride -seemed like typical Florida to us. The highlight of our trip was staying at Ocracoke Island - small, quaint, wonderful!! Want to go back again soon.

I don't see any reason not to, up to 45' should be fine on the roads, just check if there is a limit on the ferries, I just don't remember if there is a limit, not that there is one.

Not sure where you may have heard that. All sizes of RV's in the RV parks there just like anywhere else. We had our 42' HR there a couple of times.
Regarding ferrys, here's the FAQ from NCDOT Ferry System:
What vehicles can be accommodated?
The Ferry Division can accommodate any size car, trailer or RV that can legally operate on the highway.
Simi's use it to make deliveries to Ocracoke.
On Ocracoke itself, there are no private RV parks that we found that we would want to put our 42' coach in (personal preference), however there is an NPS beach campground with no hookups.
North of Ocracoke there are plenty of full service RV parks and a couple more NPS parks.
