Need new route around Birmingham Al.

I have been pulling a fifth wheel thru Birmingham to Florida for 18 years on I-65. I'm sure lots of you know the drill. 35-40 mph in the right lane. On my first trip in my new to me motorhome thru Birmingham, the drivers side mirror broke at the base. It would swivel and not stay in place. I was able to exit safely and continue my trip thanks to my trusty clear gorilla tape! I'm finished with I-65. Coming home I was going to take 52 thru Pelham and Helena to 459 south, then I-20 East back up to I-65. A train had the road blocked at 52 and 31 so I followed 31 up to 459. I would love to hear how others navigate around Birmingham. Thanks in advance.

Just curious? Coming from SW Michigan to Florida I use I-65 and pass thru Birmingham twice a year. Is it the road conditions that you are unhappy with or the amount of traffic or both? I was planning on following my normal route but wonder if something has changed? Were you hit on your mirror? Thanks.

MW22. I am sure that he is refering to the south side of Birmingham on I65. I hope that the inspector that signed off on that stretch of the highway has been taken out and flogged or fired or both. I live in Fl. but go north a number of times a year and Birmingham I65 is the worst part of trip.

Iím definitely talking about the road. Itís concrete, not asphalt. I think itís the expansion joints. It bucks me up and down. I wondered if the motorhome would be any better. Itís not. Anyone who has experienced this knows exactly what Iím talking about. Never had any trouble with traffic. Iím going 30 mph and everyone else is going around me. I wasnít the only one creeping along.

You didn't say where you're coming from but if you dislike I-65 so much I would recommend picking up 69 at Dodge City/I-65 north of Birmingham taking you to Jasper and Tuscaloosa. Then 82/6 to Montgomery.

Or... on the east side of I-65 take 278 at Cullman east to Attalla then south on 77/21 to Sylacauga down to Montgomery.

We always prefer secondary highways rather than interstate. Much more relaxing and you see more of the countryside.
