We know we could take I88 from Lake George, but since we were on that going north a couple of years ago and found that road to really be rough we wanted to stay off of that. Route 90 was great.

I-86 and I-81 are very round about roads, but are well maintained. If taking I81 from the east of Syracuse get off at I-481 south and pick up I-81 SOUTH of Syracuse. I-81 thru the city of Syracuse is twisty, in poor shape, and narrow.

I like driving our trailer on most NY state highways, as long as you stick to the numbered state and US routes in NY, you will be on mostly well maintained and smooth two lane highways. Use a GPS that is programed for trucks and RVs that will keep you away from low overpasses, which are numerous around here.

Best advice I can give you is this: Avoid driving thru Ithaca. Especially with a large travel trailer or motorhome. The small city is notorious for heavy traffic. To get thru the deep valley at the south end of Cayuga Lake you have to drive on the city's streets. And while they are safe truck routes, on weekends and late afternoons it can take a half hour to drive the 2 miles thru "town".

Welcome to the Finger Lakes. Check out Letchworth State Park
