Harris Beach State Park just north of Brookings is a good place for a stop, overnight or for a few days.

We are regulars up and down the Oregon coast. Here are our favorites from North to South as far as places to stay:
- Lewis & Clark Golf and RV resort in Astoria
- Cannon Beach RV resort
- Pacific Shores RV Resort (privately owned but they still rent)
- Winchester RV Resort (avoid parks nearby as they are crawling with ATVS traffic) ATVS not allowed at resort

Mapleton is about 15 miles east from Florence on 126. Don't blink or you'll miss it.

Oregon Coast RV Park Camping – McKinley's Marina & RV Park – Waldport, OR
Very nice newer park with level cement pads. May be hard to get into due to fishing/crabbing season. Try to get a spot overlooking Alsea bay, you will love it.

As the OP I would like to thank everyone who encouraged me to take US Hwy 101 through Oregon. I completed the trip north to south yesterday, and it was fantastic. The views were outstanding and we used many of the pull-offs to stop and gawk. The trips over the bridges and through the tunnels made it even more memorable. The only white knuckle parts were in some of the state parks where the road narrowed, and the shoulder disappeared, but all's well that ends well, and we are in Crescent City , Ca today looking forward to California's portion of 101 and the Redwoods.

Glad you enjoyed it. And Oregon has some of the best State Parks I've ever seen.
Although you probably don't want to mess with hwy 1 in California, travel and stay on 101 and use your toad to explore the coast via hwy 1. It's not to be missed.
Best of luck.

Stay in/around Monterey and take the TOAD down 17 Mile drive, and even to Big Sur.
Beautiful area.

We are quitting our jobs at the end of this school semester, then hitting the road. So Spring Break will not be an issue.
We will then tour OR and WA until we find our next home/jobs...
Not in any rush, and hoping to spend at least 3 months dragging the trailer around. Checking out the sights, visiting all the little towns, dropping off job applications and resumes wherever we feel we might be happy for the next portion of our lives.

Just a comment, based on three N-S coast trips starting out from home in Anacortes. If anyone is planning to do this trip from a starting point in WA north of Olympia and doing the whole coast from Astoria, I'd suggest taking US-12 from Olympia to the southern WA coast, then over the bridge to Astoria. Otherwise you have a long trek back north on the south bank of the Columbia from Portland.
Another possible "gotcha" is that some of the Oregon SP campgrounds were built when RVs were mostly 96" wide and few were longer than 30'. The inside roads in these older parks are narrow and the camping spaces are at 90-degrees to the road. Backing our 32' x 102" rig into a slot at Harris Beach wasn't easy (as three scraped-up doors on the right side storages showed). A 40-footer would be a real challenge.
