Oregon to California in Winter

We are planning a couple of trips from CA to Oregon this winter in a 40ft DS towing a Ford Ranger. Siskiyou pass is notoriously bad in winter with snow and ice. Any good alternative route suggestions?

Truckers do it all the time. Just watch the weather and hit the high spots mid day. You might have to wait a day or two but I do it with no problems.

The only chance of snow free travel would be 101. I5 your only worries will be Redding to Roseburg. Medford to Roseburg has several places high enough to see snow all winter. Watch road conditionw. Tripcheck Oregon has lots of road cameras most with temps that are updated about every 15 minutes. And is a good source for current road ciponditions.

I would add that the Grapevine ( I-5 North of LA) can get snow and gets closed during snow storms.

Your biggest areas of concern for winter travel on I5 from Ca to Or are: just north of Redding as you start the grade to Lake Shasta, Dunsmuir, which becomes a real hole in a snowstorm, Yreka to the Oregon border can get shut down for days at a time, depending in severity of the storm and obviously, Siskiyou Pass going toward Ashland. After I retired, I lived outside of Yreka, and had to make trips back to the Bay Area in the winter - not always a good time. I have seen I5, between Yreka and Siskiyou summit shut down with cars stuck on the freeway for several days until they can get it cleared (locals were carrying food to the stranded motorists then). Just really need to watch the weather - closely.

As said. Be a weather watcher and when clear you can be up and over in a matter of hours.

.... just wondering ... why going from California TO Oregon in WINTER? Most do the opposite.

Oops.... I just saw that your title is correct OR to CA but your first sentence says CA to OR.
