Orlando to Corpus Christi via Biloxi/New Orleans

We're planning a mid May trip in our 30' Class C Winnebago, towing a jeep wrangler. Leaving Orlando going to Biloxi then New Orleans and eventually on to Corpus Christi. Any suggestions as to routes, camping areas, things to see and do would be greatly appreciated.
Thank ya'll!

We stayed at KOA West, New Orleans, LA off of Jefferson Hwy. It's actually in a little burrough called River Ridge, LA. Driving in you get the feeling you should not be in the neighborhood, but once in the CG we were as secure as in any other CG. The neighbor hood only looks bad, but everyone was nice.

I'm not sure if the East bound I-10 has been fixed, but it was a roller coaster ride, with me slowing down to 25 mph to keep from bouncing all over the place. I'd go in on the West side, or the Ponchatrain Bridge.

Others will be along with more CG's in that area. I-10 is spotted with RV parks.

3 nice LA state parks

I have stayed at 3 very nice LA state parks that are near New Orleans ...

Near Mandeville (Lake Ponchartrain causeway)
  • Fontainebleau
  • Fairview-Riverside

near Westwego (west bank of New Orleans)
  • Bayou Segnette
All have large sites with water and electric ... dump stations

If you have the time, US-98, along the ocean in the panhandle, is an alternate to I-10. We stayed a few nights East of Panama City at the Ho Hum RV Park, where you can park right at the edge of the beach.

Thanks so much for your input. We're going to stay in either Fairview-Riverside or Fontanbleau.....and take 98 from Caravelle at the Ho Hum RV Park. Makes it so much nicer when others have been there.....thanks again for your input!!!

Well,

I have been sorting bags of stuff from previous trips, and came upon the Ho Hum RV Park brochure. They have 50 sites, and 16 of these are right on the Gulf. If you get one of these, you can see the sunrise and sunset out of your left and right windows...

I have a friend that just came back from Ho Hum. He says they have upgraded all sites to 50 amps and put down fresh shells. Should really be nice.

And if you want to stop and tour the metropolitan Houston area, there are two RV parks over by the Astrodome, or try Green Caye, Dickinson, TX as a jump of point for Houston and Galveston.

You could jump off from Galveston to head to CC via the Blue Water Highway into Freeport and then pick up 35S to points South. Stop and go in spots, but a nice unstressful ride.

Wayne M: Getting down toward Angelton from westbound on I-10 up near Baytown looks complicated. So if migrating from FL down toward Rockport/Corpus, w. 40' MH towing car, can ya describe your BEST recommendation OR is it to take 59 S. off the beltline around Houston??? Thanks.

Chickadee,
The fastest way would be to use I-10 to 59S, if you don't mind interstates.

Depending on where you want to stop and if you want to tour Houston or Galveston. There are plenty of CG in and around both cities.

From Baytown, you could use 146S, or go over to I-45S. 146S would be less traffic, but that really depends on time of day. There are "millions" of people who get off work at the same time. On 146S, check for one 13' clearance where 146 meets I-45. If you want I can run down there when I get home and check it, but I believe the lowest is 13' and the others are all 14' clearances. I-45 would be no problem with clearances at all.

The Blue Water Highway is a narrow country road that goes from Galveston to Freeport. There is no problem getting to it by taking 61st St. to Seawall Blvd and truning South (right). Galveston State Park is on that hwy and presently only has about 20 sites that can be occupied. They are in the process of remodeling after IKE.

If you were staying in the area, and just wanted to jump down to Corpus, then I'd pick up FM-2004 out of Hitchcock to Lake Jackson, then pick up Hwy 35S. By and far, Texas roads are fairly good. I made the trip years ago in a class C with no problems. It was just as wide as my class A. My father-in-law made it in a class A Southwind several times when he was in his 70's. Truthfully, I have not made the Bluewater Hwy in a MH, but I'm up to it someday when I head that way. Depends if I'm in a hurry.

The fastest route for me out of TC is I-45N to Beltway 8W, to 59S. That has me headed in the wrong direction for 60-80 miles but it is the fastes.

Thanks Wayne!!

Think we'll run S. from Houston on 59. Been to Galveston so trying to wiggle through S. from Baytown probably ain't worth the aggravation. Hope this is helpful for 'depenteco' (OP) also. Should be. Thanks again.
