The last section of Route 66 that was active until I-40 took over is in Williams Arizona. Route 66 runs through downtown and utilizes one way streets east and westbound. We were there in 2005 and at that time there was a lot of nostalgic places in town to visit. Williams is a must stop.

+1 on Google. Too many things to see along Route 66. Also depends how dedicated you are to staying on the actual Route 66 vs paralleling it along the interstate. There are plenty of section that have been bypassed. Some are adjacent to the various highways that have replace it but other pieces are out in the middle of nowhere, many miles form the nearest interstate.

There are many good books out on the drive mile by mile and lots of suggestions by Googling. Here are a couple:

When in Albuquerque NM, take Central Avenue (mostly old Rte 66) west of I-25. You will see several restored (and some dilapidated) motels and restaurants from the 40's through the 60's. Some of these in SW architecture + neon will make you smile. If your schedule permits, continue west out I-40 up 9 Mile Hill and stay at the American RV Park. We enjoyed our stay there. Camping World is on the other side of I-40 at that exit. When in Albuquerque, be sure to visit Old Town. They also have a wonderful zoo.

A must stop, that corner in Winslow, AZ. The Crater RV park is a good overnight stop and having a meal at the BigTexan in Amarillo is highly recommended.

Devils elbow, MO

As it was stated earlier, Route 66 takes many paths during the years. One of those sections passed over Big Piney River, at Devils Elbow, it's a grade down to the bridge. The truckers did it and then a break at the rest stop. Near Fort Leonard Wood.

Sorry, OP, I don't mean to hijack your thread. We will be heading back to Albuquerque at the end of April and twojayhawks' post caught my eye.

Rt 66

Love this part of the country!

The longest untouched stretch of Route 66 in AZ starts in Topock, travels through Oatman, into Kingman and then towards Seligman and on to Ash Fork.

One BIG caveat is the route from Oatman to Kingman is not really RV friendly. Driving Sitgreaves Pass from Oatman to Kingman has switchbacks for 5 miles at both sides and the road is narrow with lots of potholes. It is a VERY winding road with considerable ascent and no barriers. Plus parking a large rig in town would be a real challenge, IMO. However if you can manage a way to get to Oatman, it's a really interesting (if not smelly) place to visit.

A couple places I would not miss if you can help it (going East):
1 - Seligman AZ - totally cool & kitschy!
2 - Meteor Crater (about 30 miles south of I-40/Rt. 66, but cool)
3 - Winslow AZ - do not miss the "Standin' On The Corner" spot downtown, or the La Posada Hotel (they welcome visitors who are not hotel guests). Next door is an old train depot that has on display the largest Navajo rug on record
4 - Holbrook - Wigwam (Tee Pee) Motel
5 - Petrified National Forest (just a bit off of I-40/Rt 66)

We have stayed there twice since the beginning of the year. That CG is pretty awesome. It's been open only a few years...I'm thinking 2-3, and everything is brand new, including the casino next door. Noise is not an issue. Look it up on campgroundreviews.com.
