Road Conditions to Crater Lake

Hello all - new to IRV2 and looking for some advice on the road to Crater Lake RV Park in Prospect, OR. We have a new 31 ft Minnie Plus pulled by a Ram 1500. Google shows the shortest route to Crater Lake from Reno as 395 to the 139 to the 62. The alternate would be 395 to the 44 to the 5 and then the 62. Not sure how hilly or curvy either route would be so I am trying to determine which would be the least stressful as this would be our first big trip in our trailer. Thanks for any advice!

395/139/97/62 is a good route. When are you going? The snow doesn't melt this early in the year. Explore this national park site for lots of good information on all aspects of the park. Stay in the park itself or Collier State Park is very nice to stay as is Joseph M. Stewart State Rec. Area.

We won't be traveling until July so hopefully no more snow - thanks for the reply.

You have a good pull out of Susanville for five miles or so then run a canyon up to Adin. You might not enjoy the road your first time towing. I would take 395 to Alturas, you can take A-1 (A-10?) and bypass Susanville. In Alturas take 299 to Canby then hook up with 139. Another pull out of Canby. Continue till K Falls then on up 97 to 62.

Either way you will be fine.

In my OTR days, i had a run once a month from Reno to K falls, nice little turn and burn, you will be fine going 139 into Kfalls then 97 to 62. If i could handle going through Susanville with 105,000 pounds, you will be good with your trailer. Be sure to stop by Dick Howards in K Falls, best Pepperoni and summer sausage you will ever find. I always get the elk. Right next to Les Schwab

I grew up on the other side of the mountain, just down from diamond lake, so we would go there once in awhile on the way to Medford

Fishing there is great now (according to my friends and dad) a lot better than it was when I was there

What were you hauling at 105,000 pounds?

Big rolls of paper. Ran a 3 axle trailer and drop axle on the truck. These were being run down to AZ someplace. I would meet up with another driver at the truck stop just outside Reno and switch loads, i would then bring back a load of aluminum billet. They had a guy that did that run twice a week, but i would fill in for him about once a month when he took time off. Last i heard that run died when the machine shop in Portland shut down.

Thank you for all the replies. Sounds like we should be fine. We're doing several short trips to get used to the trailer so by the time we leave for Crater Lake we should have the first time nerves gone. Will report back after the trip. Thanks again.

If you are thinking of staying at oilier State Park in July - get reservations now, as they book quickly. Oregon state parks are now starting to get a lot more use than they used to.
