Route from Santa Barbara to Buellton, CA
My wife wants to take our MH to Santa Barbara CA area. I was wondering if it is safe to drive 101 from Santa Barbara to Buellton, CA. It looks like the best RV park is Buellton.

No problem whatsoever. My only second adventure in our new 34' Dolphin last year was from Southern California up Hwy 101 through Santa Barbara to Buellton. Really nice drive. We stayed at Flying Flags right off the highway. Nice park and lots to do around Buellton. Now Highway 1 is a different story.

We have driven that route several times, the road is fine, the drivers something else We also drove all the way from San Diego to Crescent City on PCH (CA 1) and 101. Take it slow, annoy the guys in sports cars and on motor cycles and enjoy the views.

No problem on 101from SB to Buellton. You will take 101 North. There is no Hwy 1 from SB. Avoid Hwy 154 as GPS may send you that way. On 101 there is a short north bound tunnel with no issues and a grade to climb that is not too difficult. Besides Buellton, consider camping in Ventura, south of SB, on Rincon parkway. You will camp right on the ocean. Dry camp only. Arrive Monday or Tuesday for best results as it is no reservations. State parks on ocean, just north of SB are El Capitan and Rufugio, they are also on no reservations this time of year. Enjoy your visit!
Try and live up to your dogs opinion of you.

If you have time in Buellton I'd suggest a trip out to Jalama Beach. It is on the coast about 16 miles west of Hwy 1. There is a county campground there but those 16 miles are slow, winding and narrow. The reward is a beautiful, wild section of the coast. There are picnic tables and a small store and hamburger shop in the cg. I don't know if the hamburger shop is open this time of year.

Not to be too fussy, but there is a Hwy 1 through SB and north, it happens to share its alignment with 101 so the road is signed 101/1 until you get well north of Goleta where there is a wonderful Elks Lodge for those who are members to camp with water and electric and an onsite dump.

While in the area you don't want to miss Solvang, just East of Buellton on Hwy 246. Sample son good Danish food and treats.

+1 on Jalama Beach. Used to surf there decades ago when there were no RV sites. And yes to Solvang - great Danish food and shopping.

Just to amplify Winepress, Garmin GPS will route you off 101 onto 154 in Santa Barbara (going North). The GPS calculates it is faster. Great sports car and motorcycle road, but slower by far in an RV. Several state beach camp grounds on the way but like most CA parks they have size limits of 30 to 35 feet listed. That said, most parks have a few that are longer, and will let you stay there, but it is sort of catch as catch can. Great wine tasting in Solvang (see the DVD "Sideways") and off of Zaca Mesa Rd.
