Route From Yorktown, Va. to Allentown

My wife and I will be leaving late next week to travel from Yorktown, Va. to Allentown, Pa. In the past, I have always taken the route:

64 to 95N and exit in Fredericksburg for RT. 17
Rt. 17 to Winchester, Va. and then pick up Rt 81N to Harrisburg and then Rt. 78E to Allentown

Looking at Google, it is recommending 64 to Richmond and pick up 95N
95N to 495N at Tysons Corner
495N to 270N to 15N to 83N to 81 in Harrisburg

Has anyone travelled this 2nd route recommended by Google and would you recommend it over my normal route through Fredericksburg? It looks like it might be faster and shorter, but I am not sure about traffic and congestion?
Thanks,
Dave

I have a lot of experience driving in the areas you mention and there is no "good" way, but for my money I would follow your route because it avoids the Washington DC area. It is at the point where there is no reasonable time of day to travel that DC corridor unless in the middle of the night. The north end of I-95 where it joins I-495 will be your first challenge, the second will be I-495 to I-270 junction. You can easily loose a couple hours in traffic between the two.

On a Friday, I wouldn't take either of those routes in an RV. I know this because I made both mistakes. You will most assuredly be caught in traffic hell. Maybe after midnight.

I-64 to I-8. Low traffic, low drama, good rest areas, gas stations and truckstops.

I did I95/495 around DC once and will never, ever do it again. Added three hours to the trip from Newport News to Hershey. Stay with the US17/I81 route. I would go a set further and just take US17 from Yorktown rather than I64/95. Easy drive up the middle peninsula to Fredericksburg.

Don't forget if driving a RV with propane you are not permitted to drive through Fort McHenry tunnel in Baltimore.
