Route Guidance between Carson City, NV and Colorado Springs. RT 50 in 5th Wheel???

Hi Everyone,

We're looking for the best route from Carson City, NV to Colorado Spring, CO in July
We are new to the 5th Wheel and looking for advise, places to stay, and things to see.

Specifically, what are the thoughts on RT 50 through Nevada.

Incidentally, Our trip is taking us from Hilton Head,SC to Davis, CA and back with outbound stops in Mongomery Al, San Antonio, Tuscon, Long Beach, Las Vegas, Davis, CA.
Retunring through Carson City, NV, Colorado Springs, Hot spring, Arkansas, Huntsville, Al and home

its a good road ,the most direct route without any major cities
stay on the top end of the fuel as service is pretty sparse.

US 50 has the loneliest highway moniker (there was some touristy programme for this). Quite lovely and charming for its desolation. As noted, fuel up at every opportunity. After you leave Fall, Ely and Eureka are the "big" towns. There's also Austin and Baker but I haven't been on that highway for 2 dozen years.

Just watch your speed carefully (probably not hard if towing) as the counties need the revenue.

There is a wandering sand dune east of Fallon. If you want to make the diversion to Gabbs, there is a fossil site (Ictyhosaurus, the state fish) at Berlin.

Just beware that it's the high desert and the temperature swing in summer can be extreme. 36C or warmer during the day plunging to the 0C temp at night (some towns on the route often make the state high and low temps.

We've always loved driving on Hwy 50. Nothing is blocking the beautiful vistas. As stated, it's not a place to shop for the cheapest fuel price. Travel on the top half of your tank. Make a stop at Great Basin Nat'l Park at the far east end. Enjoy the trip!

I agree with the others about US 50 in Nevada. In fact it is pretty much a non event all the way through Utah as well.

From Grand Junction I recommend the route shown on this MAP. The first 10 miles leaving Minturn on US24 is serious mountain driving. Easily negotiated with your RV but you will definitely be in the mountains. The rest of the way is pretty easy. About 8 miles from Minturn you will pass Gilman, a ghost town that was last occupied in 1984. As you drive by, in your mind's eye picture raising children there!

I70 and I25 between Vail and Colorado Springs has multiple issue that make an alternate route attractive. Here are some of the issues. Parts of that section of I70 is in poor condition and will shake you up pretty good. Depending on the weather, the season, the time of day, etc. Vail to Denver can be 100 miles of rush hour stop and go traffic. Denver traffic to get from I70 to I25 can be bad. There is currently a large construction project between Castle Rock and Monument on I25.

Normally I would recommend that you take US50 from Grand Junction to Poncha Springs. However there is a construction project west of Gunnison that will close US50 from time to time for several hours per closure. The detour (CO92) around that adds ~ 1.5 hours to the trip from Delta to Gunnison and it is a pretty rough road! Depending on you, it might be a white knuckle drive as well!
