I use a book map and take back state roads to get to Southern Alabama. Hate the East Coast Interstate Highways.

Maps program. I-64 to I-81 south, Knoxville - I-75 Chattanooga, I-59 tuscaloosa. 747 miles. 10hrs Also shows scenic route 850 miles and 16 hrs.

I use Windows Maps program, easy and compares route options. Free download

fwiw..... I'd go through Atlanta any day versus Chattanooga. If you get in traffic in Chattanooga you just stop and wait. At least in Atlanta if there is a problem on one route there are other routes around/through. You have to pay attention to your traffic reports (Google Maps or Waze on iPhone, etc.).

When we lived just south of Richmond in Chesterfield, we made the drive by car frequently to Helena, AL. We alternated between two routes, most of the time we took I-95 south to I-20 west to B'ham then south on 459. Other times we would take I-95 south to Petersburg then I-85 south to I-20 at Atlanta.

We now live in SC and take our motor home west on I-20. We gave not had any major problems going through Atlanta.

Thanks for the suggestions. Iím going to take the more southerly route using 95 & 85 keeping a eye on the weather. Early January weather can be fickle.

By absolutely no means do you need to go through Atlanta to get to Tuscaloosa. Why you can go anywhere and everywhere without going through Atlanta.

I'd take 81 to 40 to Knoxville, then 75 to Chattanooga then 59 to Birmingham then 20 to Tuscaloosa.

Thanks for all the replies and good suggestions. All the routes suggested take roughly the same time. Weather will make the decision.

Our main problem taking I-85 was it seemed to always be under construction from Greensboro to Charlotte. Of course I-95 has its issues but we've been driving it for so many years it is almost 2nd nature.

Atlanta is no fun, but if on 20, it is a straight stretch.

Thanks again for your input. We have travelled to Florida via 95 many times. We will be traveling to Florida after visiting granddaughter in Tuscaloosa because unfortunately she canít make it home for Christmas. Now we will be looking for a campground close to the college.
