Here is the route we take. If non rush hour, save a few minutes/miles going through Dallas instead of U.S. 82.
And if you prefer I75 to 98 in Florida, do that, but we prefer the relaxed, non 18 wheeler less traveled way.

This time of the year I could go I10 to Las Cruses and then north to Albuquerque. Less chance of bad weather.

Avoid I-20 through Shreveport LA.
Be sure to avoid I-20 through downtown Shreveport LA. The path shown in the previous link uses the correct path on I-220 to bypass downtown. This is very important.
Other mapping programs might try to send you through the downtown section.
This section through downtown is the worst road I have been on recently.
Regards, Jerry

Unfortunately I-220 isn't that great either but it is better than I-20.

This is the route I'd recommend, also. Avoids the big cities and easy driving.

I would have a few different routes planned. At the end of April you could have all sorts of weather.

X2.
The most important factor in trip planning/execution is weather forecasts. Keep on top of weather to decide which route to take for the next day or two, or even possibly stay put until bad weather passes.
I amazes me how many folks get caught in bad weather predicaments because they did not pay attention to forecasts.

We're leaving FL in August and will go via:
Mobile, AL
Jackson, MS
Little Rock, AR
OK City, OK
and then I-40
Over the years we've tried just about every which way around/through Dallas and don't like any of the alternatives. Traffic, road conditions, overnight stops - the whole experience just turns us off. It might take an hour or 2 longer but we find it more pleasurable (well.... as pleasurable as one can expect given the distance).

Many thanks for the great suggestions. Considering Wolfe10's route or I-40 as we like the idea of going through Little Rock/Hot Springs. Off to the west!
