San Marcos to El Paso for Thanksgiving

I will be traveling from San Marcos to El Paso for Thanksgiving and it looks like I'll be taking I-10W/US-87N. Doesn't look as if there is much on that route. Has anyone done that route and any suggestions? I will need to stop for a night along the way; suggestions?

We travel this route once a year to go to Nevada. You have hills from Comfort to just past Sonora with a couple of semi steep grades. Past Ozona pretty much flat and can get windy. We usually stop over in Van Horn which is about 6 hrs from San Antonio where we start out. From Van Horn to El Paso just a couple of hours or so. The park in Van Horn is a former KOA and usually gets a lot of overnighters especially big rigs because the pull thru are big and spacious.
