SB through Atlanta - best route?

We are headed southbound from Nappanee, Indiana to Ft. Myers and will take I-65 to I-24 to I-75 en route. How about Atlanta? What is the best way to deal with it? Early, late, weekday, weekend? Straight through or via outer loop interstate?

Having driven in Washington, DC last year on Good Friday, I feel that we can handle most anything we will get in Atlanta, but I am also smart enough to know that it always makes sense to ask for guidance first.

Suggestions and comments will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Deek

Between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM or after 7:00 PM drive straight through you should have no problems Atlanta is not bad during these hours. Have a safe trip.

Ditto on the hours and route. The 285 Loop is much worse than straight through downtown. 4, 5 or six lanes all the way through downtown. Most of the truck traffic is routed to the 285 Loop'

G'morning Deek:

We've frequently run through Atlanta w. out 45' pusher, towing car, and although we've taken the bypass ONCE, we've found it MUCH simpler to take I-75 right through Atlanta. It does make sense however, to make the run either during the hours noted above to make it even easier, OR....best time, in our opinion, is try to make the run during a Sunday, preferably between 9 a.m. and say 2 p.m. although any time on a Sunday is best. Second best time would be on a Saturday. Whenever you make that run, straight through is the best. Just settle into the main "through" lane and go with the flow.

I've always gone straight through, regardless of time of day. If you hit rush hour, 285 is still worse.

South bound after the 75 / 85 merge stay alert. You need to change lanes, moving towards the left. Again as you go around downtown Atlanta move to a middle or left lane to avoid the I20 exit.

Straight through is much better. Mid day time wise. Stay in center lane. At some points the road is 7 lanes wide in one direction. If you go on Sunday, make sure the stadium is not having a game to avoid stadium traffic.
