SC to Lake Superior

Planning a 2 week trip the beginning of July in small caravan: 38' DP with toad and 30 foot TT pulled by Ford 150. Plan to go from SC to I-75 up to Sault Set. Marie, crossing into Canada and across northern shore of Lake Superior to Duluth and then back home via Bloomington IL, Indy and Louisville KY..

Will travel with 3 humans and 5 Labs. Interested in fishing and sightseeing. Would be interested in advice, especially for dog friendly campgrounds.

Make sure the license and shots for the dogs are up to date. You will need to prove this to get into Canada and the U.S. With them. You're going to need passports to get in and out also. But you probably know all this already.

Let's see.. Left Taylor MI (around 40 miles north of OHIO Thanksgiving afternoon..around 3pm... Arrived Seneca, SC (South Cove Park) on Black Friday, about 3 pm Single driver,, Route was mostly I-75 but I went local roads and entered Seneca from the West on the seqauential numbered highway (123/76/Sandifer Blvd to 29 north two lights then right one road and right to end of road)

Distance from Taylor to Canada via the route you plan is not far removed from that (Michigan is a BIG state).

So figure out of your two weeks 8 to 10 days are going be driving.. i think you really need a 3rd week for that trip

Beautiful area by the way.. I really love upper MI and I am sure Canada will be in the same LOVELY class in that area.. If you'd like to remain in the US I can suggst a couple places in Upper MI.

I travelled the north shore of Lake Superior many years ago ... there is good scenery between St Sault Marie and WaWa ... but from WaWa to Thunder Bay is miles and miles of small conifer forests ... if you are expecting great scenery you will be disappointed.

The South Shore of Lake Superior is much more interesting and scenic in my opinion. There are waterfalls, national lakeshore parks, mining museum, universities, many great state parks in Michigan and Wisconsin ...

There is a nice campground in Mackinaw City just before you cross the bridge that is dog friendly, I believe it was called Mill Creek. If time permits Mackinaw Island is a nice place to visit, you have to take a ferry across to get there.

There is also an RV park on the north side of the bridge about 2-3 miles west on Hwy 2, Lakeshore Park Campground. We've stopped and stayed many times sitting there watching the ships go through the narrows. St Ignace is a nice little town and you can go to Mackinaw Island from there also.

Depending on the route on the way back there are several places to say East of Duluth. We stayed at the Little Sand Bay Campground near Bayfield overlooking the Apostle Islands. This is slightly out of the way it depends on your schedule.

Good Luck

You have to see Ouimet Canyon. Tundra at one of the lowest latitudes on earth. Then there are the Lake Trout and Whitefish dinners.
