Smoother ride through NY/NJ (avoid 78/81)?

We are heading back south from a trip between NC and Nova Scotia. Got the crap beat out of us on the way up on 81/78 and thinking about running something like 209 to 15 instead.

We will be heading from New Paltz NY to Pine Grove Furnace State Park just SW of Harrisburg PA on the day in question.

Any tips on taking these roads or other recommendations are welcome. We are driving a 30 ft. class A at about 60/65 mph so getting off the interstate doesn't hurt our travel time much unless we're rolling through bunches of small towns.

When going through the New York City area you can't really make any plans. Get on Google maps and check the traffic and adjust your route as required. Generally don't try to drive through before 10AM or after 3PM.

fullmoonguru-

I followed this route in April, going north, starting at the Delaware Memorial Bridge:

295 north to Ewing, NJ
31 north to Amwell, NJ
202 north to Somerville, NJ
287 north to Bedminster, NJ
202 north to 206 north to Roxbury, NJ
80 east to Wharton, NJ
15 north to Lafayette, NJ
206 north to Milford, PA
84 east to Newburgh, NY
87 north to Coeymans, NY
912M (Mass Pike Connector) east to North Chatham, NY
90 (Mass Pike) east from there

The drive wasn't too bad. The road surface was better than what I've experienced lately on 287 between Mahwah and Newburgh.
