Southern NJ to Nashville TN Route?

I would like to travel to Nashville in April. Does anyone have a route from Southern NJ to Nashville that avoids the Beltway in DC. It is a nightmare going through that traffic. I start by traveling south on 95 over the Delaware Memorial Bridge then the google rte. takes me 95 to 81 to Nashville. I want to avoid the 95 through DC. Any ideas?

Take 95, then Baltimore Beltway west ( towards Towson) to I70. Exit onto US340 in Frederick, go south. Continue to near Berryville, VA, exit west onto VA 7. Continue to I81 south. Came back this route from Nasville to South NJ in Oct.

I agree with bandorr2000. Get to I 81 as best you can. Then it is a straight shot to Nashville. When I 81 ends in Tennessee, continue straight onto I 40 West.

Sound advise from Glenn and Gary. I grew up in Jersey and now live in Tennessee and that route is the way to go.

Just returned from Louisiana and live in southern NJ. We always go through VA using 495 and then take 66 west to 81. Never had a problem yet and we have made this trip coming and going now 4 times. We also tow our car, never had a problem. What I do know is timing is important. You do not want to be on 495 in VA during morning or afternoon rush hour but other than that it is a nice route.
