Staying at the Outerbanks?

My wife and I are planning to be at the outer banks in May 2022 and trying to decide whether to stay in the middle and do a lot of trips from there, which will be about 1hr away from Kittyhawk and 1hr away from Hatteras or just stay up north for a week and down south for a week. Any input would be greatly appreciated. And, oh yeah is two weeks enough??

Camp Hatteras in Rodanthe is the answer. Beach time, beach time and occasional exploring.

We stayed a week in center area so that we could go exploring north/south areas

Then took the ferries to Ocracoke Island and then over to Mainland at Cedar Island, NC to continue our trip

Will let you know after next week, that is when we hit it. We are staying at Hatteras Sands Campground.

The CG in the link attached is midway between Hatteras and Kitty Hawk but it is inland a few miles. It is basically where US 64 hits Nags Head's southern boundary. We've never stayed there.

Thanks everyone for the replies, good information. Does anyone have any input as too whether two weeks is long enough out at OBX or should we plan for longer?

We spent a week at KOA Outer Banks West and 5 nights at Hatteras Sands in April. The Koa is great for exploring the mainland and the far north end, on a future visit we will stay in the Kitty Hawk area. Hatteras Sands have small lots but it has easy access to the Village. It was under going a major renovation.

We love the campground in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore at Oregon Inlet. Water and electric and the dump station is across the road at the marina. Camping on the dunes is awesome. It’s eight miles from the campground to Nagshead.

We stayed in a house Corolla for two weeks in September for many years. The past three years we camped at Oregon Inlet in our motorhome. One thing you should do is a lighthouse tour. Curituck, Bodie, Hatteras and Ocracole. It’s a full day and lots of driving but worth the time.
