Sunflowers in SD
I promised my wife that I would take her to see sunflowers in bloom this summer. Would someone who is familiar with driving I90 across SD tell me in what area of the state where we can see the most sunflower fields from the highway? Thanks!

Well, this won't directly answer your question as my recent experience was in N. Dakota, but we did an overnight at the Hazen Bay Recreation Area on the south shore of the Missouri River in N. Dakota last summer. It's just north and a little west of the town of Hazen. On the drive up from I-94, we passed by a number of large Sunflower farms that were in full bloom. We stayed at Hazen Bay the night of August 10. Wish we could have stayed a few nights more as it was a beautiful setting with FHU sites and lots of interesting sites to see in the area. I'm sure you will get other replies, but if nothing else this will help you with timing. We loved the"backroads" drive up there as well. Hope this helps.

This was taken on Aug. 10, along Sage Creek Road (unpaved), about 1 mile west of Badlands national Park.

I should have mentioned that the primitive Sage Creek Camp Ground (within the park) has a resident bunch of prairie dogs that are not quite tame, but are not very skittish either.
There is also a small bison herd that hangs out in that general area, They can often be found wandering around between the tents.

There are a number of Lewis and Clark historical sites in this area given the proximity to the Missouri. Also up near Williston, ND is the Fort Union Trading Post, one of the earliest and most important civilian fur trading posts established for trade on the Upper Missouri.

They were everywhere as we drove the farm roads east from Custer - Everywhere

Keep in mind that there are a lot of bikes from Sturges in August - not an issue except for the increased traffic.
