Can you travel the Taconic Parkway by motor home with a toad? We are travelling from Tuckahoe, NY to Pittsfield, Mass. Any info re the best way to go would be greatly appreciated.

As a general rule, in NY, NJ and any New England state, if the road has the word "Parkway" in it, it is only for cars. While the road itself might be okay for coaches, there are bridges and other height restrictions that eliminate a coach from using the road. While well maintained, these are old roads and there seems to be an esthetic value to the way the overpasses were built, many years ago. Local residents do not want this to change.

I followed a fifth wheel on the Merritt Parkway but the guy just seemed to be looking straight ahead and was unmoved by my honking my horn. He also had a CB antenna but his radio was probably off or on a different channel.
You know why is it that you drive on parkways and park on driveways.

I am guessing by your mention of the Taconic, you are coming from Tuckahoe in Westchester, not the Tuckahoe, NY on the island. If that's correct, I would take 87 north to 287 east to 684 north to 84 east to 91 north to 391 north to 90 west to route 7 up into Pittsfield. The other option is 87 north to 287 west and stay on 287/87 which turns into the NY Thruway an take that up to 90 east and then to route 7 to Pittsfield. It is really a toss up. The first way has no tolls, the other way you will pay Thruway toll. HAPPY CAMPING

As stated previously, you can't use the Taconic Parkway under normal circumstance. You can use the Garden State Parkway in NJ. I was just on it a week ago on the way back to CT from the Outter Banks in NC. I hope you have Easy Pass ( for RV & toad if in a MH)for the tolls on the Garden State or NY Thruway. It will move you thru the toll plazas much faster. Also, if you use the Garden State, some of the overpasses have low clearance for the right lanes (12'2',13' etc..)stay in the middle lanes and you should have no problem. The clearances are placarded on the overpass. The cost of the tolls is no bargain either. Safe travels.
