Texas to Florida route

I'm looking for a decent route back to Florida from the Ft Worth area. I want to avoid as much of I-20 in Louisiana as possible, also want to avoid the tunnel in Mobile Alabama. Louisiana ..the 70's called and they want their interstate back.

If you're adventurous you could pick up US-84 southeast of Dallas and just stay on it to Waycross (or farther). I've done it Natchitoches to Opp. It's a fairly slow go with many small towns. Mostly two-lane but quite a bit of four-lane. The surface is generally rough until south Alabama; trucks beat it up. But it's not that bone-crunching break-things roughness the interstates have sometimes.

I went that way because of all the flooding in southern Louisiana a couple of years ago.

We are going Fort Worth to Baton Rouge tomorrow...
I-20 to Shreveport and I-49 down to I-10 has always been our escape route...

Just don't hit the Baton Rouge bridge between 3 and 5 PM - it's is a disaster with 4 lanes of interstate over the bridge to one lane going south - STUPID design...

This is probably the way I would go also, but you will still hit the tunnel. It is not bad. I think routing around the tunnel will add a significant amount of time.

When you see the “Welcome to Louisiana” sign, slow down. When you see the “Shreveport City Limit” sign, really slow down.

You could always take 45 south to Houston and pick up I-10.

Yeah, I'm always white knuckled thru the Mobile tunnel, but just stay in your lane, watch the other guy, and it's really not too bad. You could stay on I20 all the way to Jackson MS & miss the tunnel; ask google maps how to go from Jackson on to Florida.

You could use the US-90 bridge to avoid the tunnel. The tunnel doesn't bother me; high bridges do.

If you don't like traffic, stay away from Houston!

Ditto on avoiding Baton Rouge at all costs.

Worst highway routes for a major U.S. city.

The tunnel in Mobile is actually not an issue except for delays that occur frequently. The hazardous materials route across Cochran bridge adds 10 or 15 minutes Max till you are back on I-10.

IMO: Baton Rouge west bound is not too bad provided it is off peak hours. East bound over the bridge can be, and usually is a mess. I am convinced, in my own mind, that most Louisiana cities do not put any tax dollars into their roads. When traveling through LA, keep an eye out for the city limit signs and note the road conditions. They usually get much worse inside the city limits.
