Thanksgiving overnight stay between Albany and NH

We're traveling between Detroit and Wolfboro, NH via Ontario the day before Thanksgiving to visit family and plan on stopping for the night somewhere between Albany, NY and Keen, NH instead of going straight through. Looking for a spot for the night somewhere along Hwy 7 route for our 23' TT and pickup. Hardly any state parks nearby and all closed to camping by then. Any boondocking site suggestions other than Walmart in Albany? Harvest Hosts have very few options also. How strict is the NY Tollway for spending the night at their rest / service areas? Tollway website says no overnight and a 4 hr limit per stay.

We could make it in about 14-15 hrs. by car but probably more like 16-17 with the trailer. Don't especially want to drive the winding roads through VT and NH or try to get into my brother's driveway at night either.

Conversely we may plan on coming back via OH and will need a place between Niagra and Cleveland

Stay at the closet rest area. I have stayed at many NY rest areas including twice this year.

rmtravis-

When I traveled that route from November through April I would stay in a motel, with the rig parked outside.

I should clarify: I was suggesting an overnight motel stay, even though I can't offer recommendations on a specific motel, because I have not followed your route from Albany to Keene.

My usual route south (or its reverse, driving north) was 91 South from Vermont to Springfield, MA, then Mass Pike (Route 90) to Albany, then 87 South to Newburgh. It was on those trips I stayed at a motel, on the 87 South leg, which is farther south than you want to go, I think. I did look at a motel southeast of Albany, near Greenbush, but didn't end up staying there.

On one occasion I drove through Albany to Troy, then east on 7 to Bennington, VT, then north on 7 to Manchester, VT, and on to Chester via 11 East. That leg was non-stop. The road was rough for the last 15 miles into Chester.

I have traveled 9 East from Bennington to Brattleboro, VT, but not in a motorhome or truck-with-trailer.

Not much help, I know.

I agree that stopping would be wise; the east-west roads through Vermont and southwestern NH are OK, but I'd as soon not be on them after dark if I didn't have to be- especially with deer and such on the move (hunting season).

If you're just going for the holiday weekend I would stay in motels and skip the RV. It will be cold in a RV. You could have icy roads/snow and roads will be crowded.

There is a Cabellas in Utica. It may have overnight RV lanes.

Although not on Hwy 7 we've stayed at Schodack Island State Park just outside of Albany. Looks like they are open and possibly still have electric hookups. Worth checking out.

I have stayed at Schodack Island State Park just outside of Albany and at the Ashuelot River Campground in Swanzey, NH near Keene. Both were good, but my stays were in the summer. As someone noted, that may not be a good route in the winter, nor at night. We were taking our time and enjoying the scenery. We were in a MH and towing.
Thanks,

There is a private CG east of Benington off Rt9. They also have rooms at a central lodge. I forget the name but should be able to search & find it. The turn off is near top of a up hill climb and is right at / near a ski area.

Found it.... Greenwood Lodge & CG
