The Oregon Coast...

... I drive to Canada (vancouver) from Nor Cal twice a year always late spring and early fall. this year because of a family function I'm going in July. I 5 thru central ca. and 97 thru central oregon could/will be blazing hot. I'm thinking about going up the 101 for cooler temps. anyone have any opinions about the Oregon coast in july ? weather ? speed of traffic ? I have never drove that route, but know the Oregon coast is a destination in itself not just a pass thru.

The best direction to travel the Ore. coast is north to south IMHO.
Reason is that the shore is on your right when going south....so you can just pull off in wide spots and the Pacific is right there.. rather than parking and then having to cross the 101 to continue north.
As for travel times and traffic... Hwy 101 has heavy traffic and congestion during the summer months, so you will not equal the travel times/miles per day like you do on US-97/197.
Therefore I suggest that you run 97 north to Canada, and on your return trip....Take your time & run the coast back south to Cali.

It is beautiful. Rarely over 70F. It will be slower than the freeway but you won’t want to rush. Expect speeds of 55 between towns, slowing to 25-30 in town. Campgrounds could be full. There are options such as casino or marina parking lots if necessary.

thanks, its the traffic my concern. but think I spaced out the campgrounds close enough. one nite each, Fortuna, ca., Florence, or., Astoria, or., Bothell, wa., then 7 days Canada.

Is there a tunnel on the Pacific Coast Highway near Newport that RVs need to be concerned about ?

HWY 101 in Oregon is fine for all size RVs. North to South is the preferred travel direction so you can pull off at scenic stops. It is, however, a bit hairier for a white knuckle passenger. Only real issue could be high winds and/or storm tides. Just watch the weather.

There is a tunnel just north of Florence OR that is 11’6” at the side. We went through it with our 45’ MH last summer and it’s fine if you hug the center line while traveling through it.

Full size semis run the entire length of 101 all the time!

We went fro N Ca to Olympia NP via 101 towing and had no issues with traffic, just some construction n of Eureka. Stayed at state parks, casino and RV parks. Looking forward to doing it again
