I am planning to go to Oshkosh, WI the end of July and am wondering how I-94 is thru Chicago. I will be driving a 40' with a toad coming from upstate NY on I 90.
Any help would be appreciated.

Pete;
About 18 months ago, we drove from upstate Wisconsin to Elkhart, In and used I-39 to I-80 to the Indiana Toll Road. The roads are under construction and the traffic was terrible. White knuckle most of the way in and around the Chicago area. I've been to Chicago numerous times with a car, and I-94 is no fun. I would not recommend using I-94. Unless you go south to avoid the Indiana Toll Road near Chicago you may have to deal with it. If it were me, do not use I-94 but travel west to I-39 and go north from there. I cannot advise on construction now and time of day is everything.

We recently ran the Bus through (around, actually) Chicago on the way to the Elkhart area. I-294, the Tri State Tollway, is the only way to attempt it. There's always construction in and around Chicago but going through it on I-94 is not something I would care to do. We take the I-294 bypass to I-80.

The biggest trick to handling Chicago is to be there when nobody else is. If we leave so that we run around Chicago after 8 PM on a weeknight, or mid afternoon on a Sunday, it's not so bad. There is generally heavy traffic but at those times it moves along so it's not going to cost you time. Get there during rush hour though and you'll be in bumper to bumper stuff.

I agree with cruiser. I have been both ways driving an 18 wheeler and I would recommend I-294. Right now there is construction on I-294 north of the I-80 split. Time of day is everything in Chicago. During rush hour it is bumper to bumper any way you go. Good luck and remember to keep smiling as you go through,

Hans
