Tolls during our cross country trip

Hey all! Is there a someway I can prepare for tolls along our known route during our up-coming cross-country road trip? Hear on the East Coast I'm not too worried about it because we have an EZ pass that is accepted in multiple states through the NE and Mid-Atlantic - it's just the south, midwest and west I know nothing about!

I've just returned from traveling thru most southern, midwest and all western states and did not encounter any toll roads. There is a toll road around Kansas City but we bypassed it. From my experience, toll roads are a thing of the eastern US in most cases. Traveling from Ohio to the west coast, from Mississippi to the west coast and from Missouri to the west coast has not put me on any toll roads.

If your ez pass doesn’t work in TX they will send you a bill in the mail.

As others mentioned there are extremely few tolls here in the west. The few in California take cash or credit cards that I've hit.

I-44 between the MO state line and Tulsa and just west of Tulsa to OK City is a toll toad. Last time we were on it they accepted cash but that was before the Covid thing. the Illinois tollway is currently 100% automated because of Covid. the OK toll roads might be the same way.

Just learned that the Florida toll roads now accept EZPass as well.

unless something has changed the various FL tollroads are not all under the same governing authority. make sure the tollroads you’ll actually use accept EZ Pass.

Here is where EZPass works. It does NOT work in Texas, we have been in Texas since January 13th, no pass, you get billed by mail.

We looked into a number of different toll passes four or five years ago and found that the Kansas K-Tag could also be used in Texas and Oklahoma with no annual fee or prepayment. Since our travels at that time were primarily from Alabama to north Texas and Colorado, it seemed to be the best fit for us.

I know that they just included most Florida toll roads as of this February but I'm not sure about any others.

We have the K-Tag and have had it for years. So I have an account and yes, the only states it covers is in fact Texas, Oklahoma and Florida.

That's a LOT of interstate driving in such pretty areas. I would recommend getting off of them at times!

Don't worry too much about Texas toll roads, most are easy to bypass, the ones that are not are mostly designed to speed morning and afternoon commute between the city centers and outlying suburbs, something you are unlikely to need to do if just passing through.
