Take the roads before interstates were built and get to see the real countryside and small town people.

If I was full timing…..I’d get rid of any clocks and travel by climate dictated by the calendar. South in the winter…..more Northerly in the summer.
We have all of the time in the world being retired however we have never traveled to the east coast so its new to us and was just wondering about the toll roads

I'm leaving Wednesday from Rigby Idaho to Sebring Florida. We head south on I-15 head to Mesquite the first day, about 10 hours to get out of the freeze, and across I-10 to stay out of the freeze. Tucson, San Antonio, Galveston, and Mobile are stops on the way to Sebring, then Memphis, OK City, Albuquerque, and Cathedral Gorge on the way back to Rigby.

Tolls are a not to worry thing. We use the plate reader method of paying tolls and it's in the "way less than a tank of fuel" area when they mail the bills home. We are a 40'DP with a towed. It's like $1-200 total, for the whole round trip.

The 12 Hours at Sebring race is 12-16 March, with the big 12-hour race on Sunday, and it is amazing to watch. First to finish with the most laps wins, and Cadillac led most of last year's race, only to lose in the final hour after a yellow flag restart closed the gap with the Audi behind him. The Caddy got stuck behind a Corvette. It's several categories of cars, all racing at once. And it starts at like 9am and goes till 9pm, rain, shine or Armageddon, not like the wossies who can't run in the rain.

As you've probably know, the east is much more congested than west of the Mississippi. Traveling in the west we find many wide open roads that avoid interstates. Once you cross the river it is much more difficult to find similar drives.

We are Thousand Trails members, so we go to Orlando allot. Coming south on
I-75, south of Ocala pick up 44 to Leesburg. In Leesburg pick up 27 south and follow to Clermont, west side of Orlando.

Another route to use from Mobile so you are not on the interstates is Hwy 98. It goes along the coast and can be a nice ride. But be prepared for towns, stop lights and a longer time getting there.

Either way, no tolls. We generally do a month or more in the Orlando area, right now we are in Key West for 3 months.

Where in Orlando are you going?

EZ Pass works in FLA unless, perhaps, you have an old transponder.

[QUOTE=TonyMac;6945461]God speed and tailwinds to you too.

Ain't that the truth, sometimes, when I'm driving into a headwind, I feel like I can "SEE" my fuel gauge moving.

Tony,
If you are lazying your way to Florida, you might want to consider a visit to the battleship Alabama in Mobil Bay. I could not do it in a full day if you include the submarine too. Next up would be the Naval aircraft museum at Pensacola where the blue angels are located. That's a full day.
Just east of Tallassee on I-10 is a great car museum well worth a visit.
When you get to Ocala there is the Don Garletts drag racing museum that will take a day if you add in the Nation Parts Depot car display almost across the road. Also check out Diezerland in Orlando in the old mall. It's a treat......
I won't miss any of these when I go in April.

The other Tony here, we just did the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. A ton of interesting fact & airplane, and IT"S FREE!. They do take donations to help run the place but there's no pressure at all to give.

We didn't have time for the Alabama & the Sub as we passed Mobile, next time. And the Don Garlets museum sound good too, thanks!

Any tips on which one is the better of the two? I am concerned about tolls for the motorhome and the car I am towing. I heard someone paid $700 for a toll on his motorhome it could have been fake news I don't know. I have heard about tolls passes like EZ-pass and other ones not sure how they work.
Thanks
Depending on the time of year - the storms across Nebraska and Kansas are quite impressive - and would definitely be something to try and avoid. It's also difficult to find places to stop when driving across either one - rather few options and they fill up very early.

Uni

Order a UNI Transponder from Amazon ($14.95) and setup account with Central FL Expressway Authority (cfxway.com). All FL toll roads and EZPass in other states. No fees, only tolls. UNI Transponder available directly from CFCWAY.
