Travel to Gatlinburg TN
I am considering going to Gatlinburg from Slidell, LA. Just wondering how mountainous the area is since I haven’t driven in any mountains.

I assume you would be traveling across on I-40 and that gets you close to Gatlinburg. The main road heading from I-40 is hilly in places, but nothing I would be concerned about. Very pretty (and crowded area).

Where are you going in the area? There are lots of RV parks in the area, but with the crowds, it is busy there. While in the area go to an area called "The Island". There is one of the big ferris wheels and the scenes from the top of it is beautiful.
The roads if you stay on the main highways (I-40) is not a bad drive. We have done the drive from Cincinnati to Pigeon Forge numerous times on I-75
and it is a good run. We have also drove the I-65 to Mobile and the I-40 from Nashville, piece of cake concerning the hills.
Once you get there take a run up to Clingman's Dome highest point in the Smokies.

Just curious as to why you chose Gatlinburg? A VERY crowded tourist area. Lots of other places up here that are just as beautiful and are not quite as overrun.

My route is I-59, I-24, I-75, I-40, TN-66. The only grade is coming up from Chattanooga on I-75 and it's just a hill and nothing to worry about.

We loved Gatlinburg. We were there Early May 2009.
Stayed at Twin Creek CG
Nice, small quiet CG just about 3 - 4 miles to the entrance to the Smokey’s.
Gatlinburg is a tourist town, but you have to go and have a meal at “No Way Jose”
Best Mexican food I ever ate.

Gatlinburg
We came in over the pass last summer with our 40' DP. It was actually easier then coming into Cherokee on 19 through Maggie Valley.
We did disconnect the Suburban and the wife drove it behind me coming over the pass as it was really pushing the RV on 19 the day before.
We really love the area overall and will be going back in June. Leaving from Minneapolis to Pensacola Beach Fl, then into PF around the 21st.
When we left going north last year we did not have any issues as others have stated.

Not a bad drive at all. Been there several times, and go thru the area a lot on way to west. Stayed at KOA once 2 years ago just in the middle of the crowd, but we found a great location just outside of town with 2 RV parks in Townsend. Very quite\beautiful place, yet near town and the Smokies.
