Traveling Thru Houston
we'll be heading to Phoenix west on I-10 from I-55 in early February. for several reasons we'd prefer not to detour off I-10 towards the Dallas area to pickup I-20 back to I-10. if our schedule holds we'd be hitting Houston late morning or early afternoon on a Friday, possibly a Saturday. absent construction or traffic accidents both of which I will check on before we get there...barrel through on 10 or detour onto 610? tolls don't bother us. suggestions?

Went through there a year ago with no problem although it was not rush hour. I'd just go through.

Given your timing, I suggest that you stick with I-10. Do everything you can to stay with lanes marked I-10. The traffic is a mix of locals and folks passing through, and sometimes the pass-through drivers foresee getting stuck at backups and make sharp lane changes. (there are 'surprise' backups at exits sometimes.) If you can stay away from the far right 2 lanes things should be less stressful. Leave yourself plenty of room for erratic driving, probably not much different than most large cities.

haven't been through or to Houston for a number of years now but have all kinds of big city driving experience but like most I prefer to avoid it if possible. I'd rather drive extra miles out of my way than sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic. thanks for the suggestions.

If you are going to hit Houston on a Friday headed West. Plan the clear Houston before 3:30 PM then your only worry will be San Antonio. Everyone from Houston goes to either Austin or San Antonio on Friday afternoon and vice versa. The reverse occurs on Sunday afternoon. Follow the advise to stay out of the right two lanes.

FWIW, 610 is not a toll road, but it also doesn’t buy you anything so far as getting through HOUSTON late morning/early afternoon. Try to be west of Katy by 3:00.
The toll road around Houston is Beltway 8 which is 7-9 miles further out than 610. Most of it is toll.

we were planning to overnight somewhere around Baytown Thursday night and again a bit west of San Antonio Friday night. sounds like I might want to overnight east of SA on Friday and scoot thru SA on Saturday morning.

If you want to loop around Houston 610 is not the way to go. For my money I'd stick to i-10.

There is a decent park on I-10 just west of Beaumont (about 90 miles from downtown Houston) Gulf Coast RV Resort.
Then you head west on I-10 and go to Kerrville, about 40-45 miles west of San Antonio. There you will find Buckhorn Lake RV Resort. Very Nice!

Here’s a route map. If it’s further than you care to drive in one day (5 plus hours), there are several good places to stay in around New Braunfels. You exit I-10 at Seguin and go north on RT-46. Then the nest day, you just take RT-46 west to Boerne, TX where you pick up I-10 again heading west. You avoid San Antonio completely.

Oh yeah, Bucees is your fuel stop in Lulling. You’ve got to see it to believe it. We have one in San Antonio too. 124 pumps at the I-35 191 exit.

from all of the comments I'm thinking the same thing. 610 would likely be my 'plan b' should 10 be plugged.

we're thinking stopping closer to Houston...maybe Baytown. I really prefer not going much past 4-hrs these days. we've been to Kerrville but it's been a few years. on our last trip Buckhorn had not been open long but it looked like a nice place. we like K'ville and F'Burg so we may hang out there a few days. we've got 16-days to get from Chicago to Mesa and so far our travel plan needs only 7-nights/8-days. plenty of down time to relax or wait out weather.
