From I81 we have taken several ales to the I77 thru Charlotte to avoid constant & traffic N of CLT.
I64 over to Rt 29 then S on 29 to Greensboro NC to I73/I74 to I95 near NC/SC line is a good alt. 29 is 4 lane divided w bypasses around towns and a few lights.
220 from Roanoke to Greensboro is similar. 220 is a little more winding but shorter than 20. I73 around Gboro an EZ connection.

Its a little longer but no city driving. I just did Fl and used 95 and went around dc on the beltway and it doesn't bother me. I time it so I hit them either before or in beween rush hours and have motored thru with no problems. If you do use 95 you have to use the Key Bridge and can't go thru tunnels because of your propane. If you use the other route there is no tunnel so no propane issues.
Dennis - Thanks for this suggestion. We are travelling from South Jersey (about 10 miles from the Del Memorial Bridge) to Florida to visit the Mouse next month. I was searching the forums and found this thread to be very helpful. One point of clarification - after crossing the Bay Bridge to Annapolis on 301, I think that will be the western shore, not eastern. Not a criticism, just trying to get it straight in my head. Thanks again.

Mark
