I've been traveling for 45 years. In cars, motorcycles and several RVs.
The biggest mistake I've done was planning too many attractions in one trip. Especially out west, many take all day to get there, then your too tired to enjoy it or too late to see it all.
Driving hundreds of miles in a day takes much of the fun out of vacationing.
Break up the country or area into smaller sections. Plan down days to relax.
If at the end of your trip when your glad to be home to relax YOU'VE DONE TOO MUCH on vacation.

I can't wait until I'm at the stage in life where I can follow your good advice.

However, for now, if we (me, wife, 2 quickly growing daughters) are going to experience some of the amazing things in this country from our Indiana home, it's going to involve long travel days, scratching the surface of most places we visit, and being glad to be home so we can relax and get ready to go back to work the next day.

We've been blessed with being able to fit in a 2-week trip each summer for the last few years. Those trips have averaged about 3,500 miles (and even more memories).

My motto: better to have seen and gotten a burning desire to explore more fully when time allows, than to have never seen at all!

My other motto: kids grow up fast - enjoy your time with them and create experiences that you can all treasure for a lifetime.

My last motto (LOL): We're almost there kids - just 100 more miles (usually said after we've already traveled 350-400 miles that day).

I think ways of travel depends on where you're at in your stage of life.

Younger with families.... have limits of vacations/school time. At that time we did cram a lot into 2 weeks time and never regretted it. The kids have now forgotten about the long drives but they still remember our destinations.

Older when kids were on their own.... more leisurely travel and longer stays. Our work vacations were longer, also.

Retired.... drive short days and stay longer but still concerned about leaving the house for so long.

Full-timing .... the very best. If we want to move 50 miles. We do it. If we want to stay a couple months.. We do it. Absolutely no time constraints.

We like the hub and spoke for site seeing.

We find a fairly well situated campground and use that for our base. We typically set a limit of 50 miles for our daily travels. That doesn't stop us from over scheduling, but we are willing to drop a stop or try to reschedule it for another time.
