What is everyone using to plan their trips?
Looking for one that will show things to see and do all alone the route.

First... read about the areas you want to pass through. Something you really want to see will dictate what road to take and where to stop. Use a paper (yes, paper) atlas to get a big picture taking you to your destination. You certainly don't have to go directly from A to B. Meandering is fun and you see more of the countryside. After you get your route planned, then put it into a GPS to take you there ... the way YOU want to go.

I like Google maps, coupled with other open windows to search about the areas we will be passing through, then I like to do a spreadsheet itinerary with wiggle room to add a day here or there in case we stumble upon something else interesting enroute, or want to stay one place longer than planned.

This has worked best for the "planner type personality" I am, and gets us not to miss too much.

You'll find with testing various things what works best for you. We love our hard copy road atlas at hand as well!!

Maybe check out FURKOT or ROAD TRIPPERS or some of the other Free Trip software before committing to a paid version. We still find Googlemaps has been the best resource for us personally.

I'm not sure there is a be-all, end-all kind of planning tool to tell you everything that is at a location you plan to stay at.

I end up googling "top 10 things to do in xxxxxxxxx". I get lots of hits. One is always Tripadvisor - that's a good site but it has become way too commercial so you have to drill down a bit to find hikes, or shopping, or sites, etc.

Other hits also provide good ideas.

Planning is fun, but it required a bit of work.

oh - using RV Trip Wizard you can enter things you want to do or see in the comments for the stop you plan. It prints out pretty good too so you have a handy reference.

We do much of the work prior to hitting the road. We have of rough idea of where we are going and when we need to be there (we are usually destination travelers). We will then visit the visitor site for the locations we will be near or want to visit and request tourist info. With that and trip wizard I plot out our trip. Some got very complicated - our delayed visit to Canada and New England looks like a static picture of a PinBall game.

Me too with the addition of google maps to check mileage and street view to check what a road looks like if I’m not sure.
