U.S. 191 in NM and AZ

Anyone familiar with U.S. 191 between Glenwood, NM and Wilcox, AZ? Plan to make that drive in our 40' DP towing a Jeep.

That's actually Hwy 78 and doesn't become 191 until Wilcox and it's pretty winding. Do not go north on 191 as that is known as the Devil's Hwy, formerly Route 666. Great motorcycle road but not for RVs. I think it's restricted to vehicles less than 30' in length.

My map shows 191 going from Aqua Prieta on the AZ border straight north without ever going into NM.

Use Google Earth and take a look at Mule Creek Rd (78) between Glenwood and Threeway.
A little curvie, was a lot of fun in an MGB. I have not driven an RV across it.

You can definitely take 180 to 191 near Eagar, AZ. That's easy. But don't try the drive on 191 from Clifton, AZ to Eagar. You won't like it!!! Constant switchbacks and a big uphill from south to north. Narrow road and impossible to stay in your lane on the curves with a 40'.

How do I know? We drove it in our early years of full-timing before we learned to investigate roads before just taking off! We started at Eagar and went south to Clifton - all downhill but still had those curves. It's 8-9% grade. Truthfully, when we realized what we had gotten ourselves into there was absolutely no place to turn around. Luckily we did the drive on a beautiful October day and didn't encounter one vehicle!

After our drive we purchased the 'Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers' and never found ourselves in a predicament like that again although we love driving mountain roads, particularly in your Colorado, but investigate first.... like you're doing!

After Eagar you can safely drive farther north on 191 to I-40 and beyond.

I drove Springerville, AZ to Silver City NM on US180 a year ago, spending a couple of days around Glenwood, NM. While there I asked a local motorhome owner about Hwy 78 and he advised against it. Note US180 in this area has a low speed limit, around 45 mph, otherwise it was a fairly good road, with a few marginal stretches north of Glenwood, though they were in the process of repaving the section just south of Glenwood when I was there, so may have fixed the sections north of there since I was there last October.

What you describe does not exist, and rather than guess at your meaning, can you clarify? It means the difference between a pleasant drive and an absolute DO NOT DRIVE IT.

Correct.

191 winds all the way from Mexico to Canada (except that un-named piece in Yellowstone!) , and traverses many different states, but none of them are New Mexico. We need the OP to clarify, because 191 in some parts is great, and in others is not appropriate for a large RV at all.

From 180 in NM we've also taken 78 to 191 in Clifton and on to Willcox. 78 was OK with our 40' MH.

Geez, I really misread your opening post and steered you in the wrong direction. Hopefully someone else can benefit from my post.

Just made the drive over NM 78 from U.S. 180 south of Glenwood, NM to U.S. 191 in AZ in our 40 footer pulling our Jeep. It's a narrow two lane road with some tight turns, but otherwise a beautiful drive and definitely "do-able". The view from the edge of the Mogollon Rim down into the AZ desert just as you drop down off the rim is worth the drive... AWESOME!

The "Devil's Highway" bs referred to US 666 from Gallup, NM, to US 191 in Utah. It was re-numbered to US 491 years ago.
