US 93 - AZ to MT?

Looking for a different route up to Montana from Phoenix, we are thinking about taking US 93. Anyone have any advice on this highway? We have used it many times in AZ, but not through the other states. It appears that it might get a bit interesting in Idaho (winding through mountains) and my wife has some very strict rules on roads after a stressful drive from Silverton to Durango (US 550) Colorado a few years ago.

Any thoughts, experiences or advice are most welcome!

We've done 93 from Arizona into Montana with our 40' motorhome with no issues. In Nevada fill with fuel when you see it as there are long distances inbetween. There's nothing in Idaho along 93 like 550 in Colorado. No steep drop-offs. Yes, some easy curves and a moderate hill north of Salmon but nothing drastic. It's a gorgeous drive.

We've always used 93 from Vegas to Twin Falls ID where we would connect to I-84 west. We've never encountered any problems on 93 up to Twin Falls, but can't speak for what it's like going on North to MT.

Enjoy your trip & safe travels...

We live in Boise, mother in law lives in MT. We drive 93 a couple of times a year in our 36'DP. Between Challis and just a few miles into MT is the worst section. No steep drop offs but just some curves that follow the Salmon River.
Not a lot of traffic, so you can take it easy and enjoy the scenry.

Looks like a great drive and would love to hear about it if you go that way.

From Ash Springs, NV to Ely, NV on 93 there are 2 small mtn. passes. Between Ash Springs and Caliente there is a small climb, no problem at all unless you are aware of it you almost won't realize you have just come over a mtn. Pass. Between Majors Place and Ely is 7722 ft Conners Pass, no problem though nothing like CO 550, but a climb and turns.

I would recommend though about 5 mi north of Ash Springs taking a left (well marked) to NV 318, abt. 35 miles shorter to Ely than 93 and better quality road, watch your fuel though!

In Ely if you take the business route (narrow streets, limited parking) very interesting OLD hotel downtown, o'size vehicle parking about a block or two away. Also if you have time tour the RR museum and take their train ride, outstanding!

I-15 exit #64 with 93 there is a large truck stop (Pilot?) there is also a small (6 truck parking spots) truck stop in Alamo. There is also a small truck stop, motel in Poston.

After driving this way to AZ from ID for the last 20+ years I haven't found a decent way thru LV except 93 all the way.

Second the advice to take NV 318 to Ely. Nicer drive than the section of 93 from Ash Springs junction to Ely!!

93 & 318 never feel like you are in the mountains constantly going up and down, you are simply UP most of the way!!! Love the trip, beautiful views and good 2 lane roads.

Update on my post #6

If you have the time and interest a detour to Rachel, NV would be worth your time.

From the junction of 93/318 north of Ash Springs there is a 3 rd road, NV 375 (the extraterrestrial highway) when you are approaching Rachel you are as close to "Area 51" the fabled "secret" test area for military planes, Aliens and flying saucers you can get. In Rachel go to the Little A'le'alien Inn (sp?) and eat a saucer/alien burger with a real Alien.

Goggle- Rachel, NV, highway 375 extraterrestrial highway and Area 51 for more information.

We just normally Park at the "junction" disconnect and drive solo to Rachel and back knowing that we will only be gone 3 hours or so or go on north to tonopah and north.

This is just soaking from a non RV perspective. Most have covered the Hwy 93 through NV with good advice. We vacation in MT every summer. Several times we have driven the route you asked about from SoCal. I would highly recommend that inc you get to Twin Falls you continue north through Sun Valley, over Galena Pass and through Stanely, Challis, Salmon and into the southern end of the Bitterroot Valley in MT. The drive from just north of Sun Valley to the MT border is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever done. Much of it follows the Salmon River and there are countless beautiful campgrounds along the way. Salmon is a smaller town we want to explore more and will be doing so this July on the front end of our 2017 MT vacation for three days.

Little A'le'alien just added to the route. Didn't realize we would be that close. It's on DW's must visit list. Being a former Roswellian, she has been bombarded with the alien "stuff" for quite a few years (the Roswell crash site was on land formerly owned by her family). Actually, these quirky side trips are what I love about RVing!

Thanks for the tip!
