US Highway 2

Has anyone taken US 2 across the northern tier states rather than the interstate.

We are considering doing this route from Wisconsin to Idaho this summer.

I've done it. It's mostly nice and variable scenery and good road.

We've done it a few times from Michigan to Washington. Those are the kinds of highways we love!

Plan a stop at Fort Peck Montana COE. When you continue on you'll see where the motto for Montana came ..... 'Big Sky Country'.

Here is a nice write-up on Duluth, MN:

How about some more tips for Route 2? Between St. Mary, (Browning) MT and Bemidji, MN.

Fort Peck, MT was our stop before & after Glacier.

Havre, MT - Beneath the Streets Tour by reservation - in 1900's people lived there

North Dakota:

Could include Theodore Roosevelt Nat'l Park

Rugby a nice little town has a monument of the geographical center of the U.S.; Prairie Village Museum; 45 mi N is the International Peace Garden at the Canadian Garden - beautiful.

In July is Fort Totten Days, ND with a rodeo and Native American Dances

Devils Lake, ND - birding, fishing

Minot, ND - another pleasant small town, Scandinavian - park with a windmill

Grand Forks ND at Minnesota border - lovely riverside parks - walking/biking, nice farmer's market, various festivals through summer, Cabelas, nearby is Larimore Dam Rec. Area

Bemidij - where the Mississippi River begins at Itasca State Park. There's also Lake Bemidij State Park

Hope this helps!

Great Ride. I've gone from Williston VT, through Williston SD, to Glacier NP, to West Coast. Planning on doing it again.

Pattison State Park and/or Amnicon Falls state park just south east of Superior Wisconsin. Pattison for better RV facilities, Amnicon Falls for rustic experience.

We've taken 2 from the Mackinac Bridge all the way to Culbertson, MT. twice. Really nice alternative to the interstates. Excellent city campground in Manistique, MI. right on the lake and another in Ashland, WI. Both on the water and worth staying at. Stayed at Wal Marts in both Grand Forks and Devil's Lake N.D. Both nice communities, with Devil's Lake being smaller but a lot more touristy. The road is good with adequate services along the way.
