US Route 2

Looking for Input. How good of a drive is it from Grand Forks North Dakota to Glacier
National Park via US Route 2? Are there things to see and do along the way and how long will the drive take? Also is getting diesel fuel easy. We will be towing a 40ft 5th wheel. Thanks in advance.

Rt 2 is a good 2 lane highway for the most part. No cell phone signal outside the towns tho. And not many private RV parks. Great scenery for the most part if you enjoy wide open spaces and a huge sky. Quite a few free and boondocking sites along the way. And mostly on the flat side, I don't recall any major steep grades.

Realistically, it should take you about 18 hours of driving time, counting rest breaks, food and fuel stops. I would plan it out for 3 days at the least. Most of it, through ND and eastern MT will be typical 2-lane highway driving through the plains - not a whole lot of sights.

The part through the Rockies isn't bad - a bit twisty in places but not impossible.

If going this summer, keep in mind that the park is not currently accessible from the east side, so you'll have to go around to at least Coram.

We were on RT. 2 last August from Williston, SD (near Fort Union Trading Post) to East Glacier. At that time, there was quite a bit of construction on the eastern side of Montana in the towns just inside the border from SD. But after getting through that, the drive West to Glacier was wide open and really beautiful, especially for somebody like me from the East and not used to the wide open vistas you see in the West. I imagine that the construction we experienced has been completed in those sections of highway by now. For us, from Williston, it was a 2-day drive to St. Mary. But as has been mentioned previously, East Glacier access is closed for now. RT 2 around the south side to West Glacier is good road though, and not difficult at all.

Fort Peck Corp of Engineer park in eastern Montana is a good resting point... big, pleasant sites. From there as you're driving west you'll know what they call Montana Big Sky Country! It's beautiful. Enjoy the trip. We've driven Hwy 2 from Washington to Michigan.

The above post is correct in that the east side of Glacier is closed for this year so keep on driving to the west side to stay.

My bad... I knew that. Have a picture of the girls at Fort Union holding hands across the ND-MT State Line.

You can do a virtual drive by moving the arrow down the road on US 2. The starting point is US 2 looking West just past the I-29 X way.

Summer is road repair season out in the mountain west so you will almost always find some work going on.
