I've been on US 221 quite a few miles north and south of Marion, NC. Personally I would have no problem taking it from Spartanburg to north of Marion. How it is after it splits off of NC 226 north of Marion I can't say. You might want to take a look at a copy of the Mountain Directory East for possible steep grade areas.
