W. Texas I-10 Safety

We are heading West from Austin, Tx to lower Ca. In West Texas I-10 runs very close to the Mexican border. Questions:

1. Are there any DOCUMENTED cases of assault, robbery, car jacking, etc. on that area of I-10?

2. As an option, has anyone driven a 35 foot or longer MH on US 285 and US 62 between Ft. Stockton - Carlsbad - El Paso?

3. Any other suggestions appreciated.

I-10 is perfectly safe. Its much faster than your alternate route, unless you want to stop off at Calsbad Caverns.

I10 should be fine. We've travelled it many times.
We have also gone on US285 from Carlsbad to Fort Stockton with our 35 foot long rig towing our car. It was a fine road.

No, but there are plenty of DOCUMENTED cases in Austin. So I'd get out of Austin as fast as possible. HURRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IH-10 is fine. Just don't wander south of it in Arizona too far.

The only problem I had on I-10 was the tumble weeds passing me like I had the brakes on (I was doing mostly 55-60, they were doing 90-110) Of course that meant I got great MPG.

I do not care what streatch of freeway you wish to travel, If you ask the quesiton "Are there any documented cases" the answer will very likely be yes.. You need to be more concerend with the odds. which are very low, 1,000,000 million people pass a spot with no problem the 1.000.001th has an "incident". That's one incident.

But it'd dang good odds.

Freeways, epically cross country ones that are traveled well by truckers, not a good spot for bad dudes because.. Well.. Though the TV shows like to show truckers and police at odds with each other.. It is a very friendly riverly and if the truckers see any wrongdoing they are on the horn to the cops faster than they can pull the lanyard and toot the horn. Truckers and cops often help each other.

And deer...there are so many dead deer from vehicle strikes on the side of the roads out there that you will lose count!

Just a quick follow up for a future trip in warmer weather.
We came from San Antonio to SoCal a few years ago by way of Lubbock where we hit US60 ant took it all the way to Phoenix.
A beautiful ride, mostly 4 lane with slowdowns thru towns, but the trip from Show Low to Globe, AZ is among the most scenic drives we have ever taken. Salt River gorge is quite a drop and climb out, but SPECTACULAR.

I have been traveling both of those routes in my RVs for the last 20 years. I am a Houston Police Officer and I have never seen or experienced anything that bothered me. I camp at least two to three weeks a year in Big Bend, and while I know there is alien foot traffic through the area, I have never been bothered. I-10 is a huge trucking route with plenty of traffic and lots of good stops. If you want to PV me to discuss various state and national parks in that area I would be glad to assist.

Regards,

Dave

We just came through there in a 35ft towing a car. We stayed the night in
Las Cruces and the next night in Fort Stockton. No problms at all.
