WA to CA

Hi everyone, so hitting the road next week… a last minute decision. And I’m traveling from eastern WA, just south of Spokane through Oregon and into Northern CA.

I have a 39 foot motorhome and want to make sure that I avoid any wildfires as well as restricted highways or highways I just plain and simple should not be on. I love the scenic drive down the coast but I’m pretty sure some of those tight curves would end my journey? Any thoughts about that?

I would like to stop at some scenic spots along the way before I get to family in California. I need to get to San Francisco to see my son but no way do I want to navigate through that city! So I’m looking to stay further south like Half Moon Bay. Then on to Sacramento valley area before heading back.

All suggestions and advice welcomed.

Which city in SF does your son live? Are you towing?

The Oregon coast, 101, is an easy drive with the RV and the state parks are awesome. I'd recommend heading that direction and then head south on 101. Don't take I-5 if you want scenery.

101 in California and Oregon is a great highway for RVs. No major issues. No need to get on Hwy 1 with your RV - quite different than 101.

I'd recommend you stay on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge for visiting San Francisco. Then you don't even have to get in or near the city with your RV which is a mess.

As for fires they can spring up at any moment so you'll just have to monitor where they are and plan accordingly.

There is a few tight spots on 101 in Oregon. Probably the worst is going to be south of Yachats for about 15 miles. Curvy, narrow and beautiful. Keep your eyes open and watch for bicycles. They always show up at the worst time.

There is a few tunnels that you will find that are marked with low clearances ON THE SHOULDER. Maintain your lane position and you will be fine, watch for the oncoming panicked drivers hugging or crossing the centerline.

That’s great to know. Do you think I can take 101 into California as well. I remember driving on that hwy in my earlier years but at that time I was driving a Miata…. Yeehaw! But night and day.

So no restrictions on 101 for a 40 footer ? And you think I can squeeze through the tunnels? Not looking forward to either getting stuck or swiping the ac units off the roof.

And you think my rig can handle some of those hairpin curves?

What have you driven on that hwy?

I’m not planning on getting on hwy 1. I think that would be a disaster!

My son actually lives south of San Francisco so I would like to bypass the city all together. It’s difficult enough driving through that city in a car. I would have snatched all the hair off my head if I attempted it in an RV!

We've driven our 40' motorhome towing on 101 all the way down Oregon to San Francisco. (daughter lives on north side of city). 101 will be just fine with your motorhome and you'll fit the tunnels.

From 101 at Santa Rosa - north of the bay - it will be 115 miles to Half Moon Bay.

Continue on 101 and at San Rafael get on I-580 taking you across the bay and thru Oakland

Exit 34 to I-238 west

Exit 16A to I-880 south

Exit 27 to 92 to San Mateo Bridge to Half Moon Bay Drive

Hope you can get your GPS to go the way you want to go. They're stubborn sometimes!

Perhaps your son would have different ideas.
