I'm trying to figure out the best route from Washington DC to Cape Charles.
We could either go 495 through Richmond Virginia and then across the Chesapeake Bay bridge, which is a route we have done before.
Or we could take 50 out of DC and across into Delaware and down. I'm not familiar with this route or the bridge. The only reason I was considering a different route was because the bay bridge isn't my favorite and we would be hitting it in the afternoon when there could be gusts.

Your 34 won't be a problem. We crossed it a few weeks ago in our 45 with toad. Large trucks do it all the time. Going the other way and taking the 50 over the Bay Bridge is more of a problem. High profile vehicles are stopped from crossing it fairly frequently. The Bay Bridge on the 50 is shorter than the CBBT, but much higher in the air (my wife closes her eyes when we cross it). Either way, you will probably be fine on a normal, non weather day.
When you get to Cape Charles you gotta go to The Shanty. Food was great.

Although I prefer the view from the CBBT, if I was coming out of DC, I think I'd do 50 just for the sake of expediency. Heading south has the risk of subjecting you to some pretty epic traffic between DC and Fredericksburg, if your timing is unlucky. Also, crossing the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, which is under construction, can be subject to backups and complete stoppages at any time.
Either bridge authority will activate warnings and restrictions if the wind is too bad.
50 east from DC, across the bay bridge. I travel across it several times a year in 38 foot motorhome. No need to go into DE, just stay on 50 to Salisbury them 13 South.
