Washington State Hwy 12

Is Highway 12 East from I-5 to Yakima,WA a good highway for travel in a 40-ft motorhome? What about any steep grades, etc?

It is a mountain pass, through a ski area. The grades are not bad and the curves are ok. It is a very nice drive. Take your time and enjoy the view. Stop at the Elk Reseve at the bottom before Yakima, although there may not be man there this time of year. I have been across many time with 40'er and toad.

If you are traveling in hot times which we are having now down shift on the 12 mile drive up hill and get about 2200 RPM, this will give the best cooling. There are several of pull off areas on the way up so no worry about letting traffic by in the areas where there is no passing lane and lots of cool down if needed. I run heavy over the pass several times a year with the MH trailer with toad and no problem.
Also there are several camp grounds on the Yakima side with good river access but no power or water and I have not stayed at the private camp areas.
Watch it out of Packwood to the pass and both sides Elk like to wait till your on top of them the trot across the road.
