Lightbulb West of DC (Frederick MD) to Durham NC

Looking to travel from Frederick MD to Durham NC in the next few weeks - would like to avoid interstates, DC/Baltimore area and Richmond VA. Basically keep it rural with camping/boondocking a couple of nights along the way. Due to the time of year assume I should stay out of the deep mountain areas.
Any route suggestions appreciated!

We have family in the Frederick area and typically come down 671 to 9 to 7 at Leesburg and then 15 to 17 hitting I95 in Warrenton. We have also hit 29. Weather is definitely an issue even on I81 through the mountains but it is a scenic route.

We try to avoid the DC area traffic if at all possible.

I think it's listed as "Warrenton" Exit 133A from the south on I95. Thanks for the correction. We still have a house off of I95 Exit 98 area and the traffic on I95 can be nasty, especially in the summer beach season. I understand completely the desire to avoid the interstates, especially in the DC area. Sometimes in visiting family we travel from Frederick to east of Charlotte and swing west. Takes longer but being retired we have the time.

Easy one. Take your pick with starting out on US15 south leaving Frederick MD

1. Stay on US15 east of the Blue Ridge which is rural the entire way south thru Virginia and into Durham.

2. At Culpeper switch over from US15 to US29 which is also east of the Blue Ridge but follows the foot the mountains. At Lynchburg change over to US501 south which will take you into Durham.

3. Jump on US340 heading toward Harpers Ferry west of the ridge thru Shenandoah Valley. At Waynesboro take I64 east over the Blue Ridge to pick up US29 or further east to US15.
